Mike Bassett: Interim Manager

A sequel to the 2001 football comedy Mike Bassett: England Manager is set to be filmed later this year.

According to Digital Spy, actor Ricky Tomlinson has signed up to the new project, where he will reprise his role as the bad-tempered and slightly deluded Three Lions' boss.

Titled Mike Bassett: Interim Manager, the new film sees the fictional coach return to the national team setup to assist German Jorgen Mannstein.

Its filming will coincide with this summer's World Cup in Brazil, where Bassett - against all odds - took England to the semi-finals in the original film.

The hugely-popular comedy, which featured a cameo from Pele, made over £3million at the UK box office.

Director Steve Barron is returning to oversee the sequel alongside screenwriters Rob Sprackling and John R Smith and he can't wait to get started.

Barron told Screen Daily: "Bassett was the last England manager to take the national team to Brazil. We reached the semis then, who knows what we could achieve this time around."

Royle Family star Tomlinson performed as the character in a spin-off series in 2005, although the ITV show failed to live up to the brilliant original film.

Meanwhile, Andy Ansah - who starred in Sky One's Dream Team - is so far the only other cast member confirmed to return from the previous film.

To whet your appetite for the new film, check out Bassett's memorable team-talk.

Looking forward to this, the sitcom spin-off they did from the first film was dire though.

From memory I thought it was decent.

I remember a scene where the team bus is being chased by angry fans and the assistant manager is trying to jump on while it's driving away. Mike goes 'come on mate, it's Von Ryan's Express' lol

Interviewer: Half time, and England trail Mexico by 2-0.

Mike: Have you heard what the crowd are ****ing shouting? "**** Bassett!" "Bassett's a ****!" "Bassett's a bastard!" "Bassett's a willy puller!" They shouldn't be ****ing shouting at me, they should be shouting at you, and do you know why? Because it's ****ing half-time, and we're ****ing 2-0 down to the ****ing Mexicans! What the ****'s wrong with you? Get your ****ing fingers out! Where's your bottle ****ing gone?

[hurls piece of equipment at the goalkeeper]

Mike: And ****ing pay attention you ****, when I'm ****ing talking to you! If you don't wanna wear the shirt, ****ing take it off! There's thousands of kids out there who'd die to put that ****ing shirt on. Get back on the ****ing field, show those bastards what you can ****ing do, or you can **** off home on the ****ing plane! You got that?

Interviewer: England lose 4-0

I think his character's based on Phil Neal in the documentary about Graham Taylor, 'Do I Not Like That!' or something similar.
