Previous promotion seasons

Now that we're on the brink of a long awaited return to the top flight, I thought it might be an interesting idea to ask other contributors which previous promotion season(s) stand out as especially memorable and impressive.

For the record, LCFC have been promoted within the football league on 12 occasions since our debut season in 1894/95. These are the stats.

1907/08 - Division Two: P38 W21 D10 L7 Pts52. Finished 2nd behind Bradford City

1924/25 - Division Two: P42 W24 D11 L7 Pts59. Finished 1st ahead of Manchester United

1936/37 - Division Two: P42 W24 D8 L10 Pts56. Finished 1st ahead of Blackpool

1953/54 - Division Two: P42 W23 D10 L9 Pts56. Finished 1st ahead of Everton

1956/57 - Division Two: P42 W25 D11 L6 Pts61. Finished 1st ahead of Nottingham Forest

1970/71 - Division Two: P42 W23 D13 L6 Pts59. Finished 1st ahead of Sheffield United

1979/80 - Division Two: P42 W21 D13 L8 Pts55. Finished 1st ahead of Sunderland, and Birmingham City (By now it was 3 up, 3 down)

1982/83 - Division Two: P42 W20 D10 L12 Pts70. Finished 3rd behind Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers (By now it was 3 points for a win)

1993/94 - Division One: P46 W19 D16 L11 Pts73. Finished 4th behind Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, beat Derby County 2-1 in Play Off Final (By now Division Two had become Division One)

1995/96 - Division One: P46 W19 D14 L13 Pts71. Finished 6th behind Sunderland and Derby County, beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in Play Off Final.

2002/03 - Division One P46 W26 D14 L6 Pts92. Finished 2nd behind Portsmouth

2008/09 - League One P46 W27 D15 L4 Pts96. Finished 1st ahead of Peterborough United 9 (By now Division Two had become League One)

It will be seen that of our 12 promotion seasons, we finished Champions on 7 occasions (6 times in Div. 2 and 1 time in Div 3 in old money), we finished runners-up on 2 occasions, we finished 3rd on 1 occasion and won the Play Offs on 2 occasions. Apart from the 2008/09 season, all of our promotions have been from the Tier 2 to the Tier 1 division.

So which was your favourite promotion season and why? And which is the first you remember?

For me it's a toss-up between the 1979/80 season when we won the league on the last day under Jock Wallace having not been top at all before and the 1993/94 season when Brian Little's injury-ravaged team skewered the Rams in a Wembley Play Off. If pushed I'd say 79/80 under Jock, but if we get to 100 points this season, which is possible, then I'll change my mind.

And if there's anyone out there who remembers us pipping Manchester United to the 2nd Division title in 1925 I'll be impressed.

1979/80 was special for me as it was the first season I started watching Leicester

I enjoyed the 1982/83 season very much

Obviously the play off wins were fab

I really think this season tops the lot though (well hopefully if we go up as champions etc)

79/80 was a great promotion season, and the last time we won the title at that level. There were huge crowds at Filbert Street for the last 6 or so league games, probably 5,000 or 6,000 in excess of the official attendances, so over 30,000 in all.

In 82/83 we were nowhere in February but went on a long unbeaten run to clinch 3rd on the last day and send Burnley down in the process. I remember going to vital away wins at Oldham and Fulham in that run.

Getting out of league one meant the most, if you look at how big clubs get dragged into it when they're down there and we were professional right from the start and won it with ease. It's also kind of nice that the one season we didn't compete in the top two leagues we were top of the third tier.

Jesus. Iv'e witnessed eight promotions now. I feel old.

I'm catching you up Jon, this (:fc:) will be my 7th and including the year I was born (during the 1970/71 season) my 8th lol

Even though my 14 month old daughter hasn't been to a game yet she is still a Foxes fan so this will be her first promotion :fc: at her tender young age lol

Not me but some current Burnley fans have seen the team be champions of all four divisions.

Top flight: 1960

2nd flight: 1973

3rd flight:  1982

4th flight:  1992

Thats quite impressive...and also quite a downward spiral at the same time...happy you are heading back to the top league (maybe).

Haven't you won both domestic cups too?

City's promotion under big Jock Wallace for me as its the first one I remember. Securing it at home, my first pitch invasion and all that. As I'm now older, I think the palace at Wembley game was fantastic. We out played them all the way with the core of what was a great team and a taste of the good times to come. Bit like now

79?80. The memories of that season still feel as fresh as a daisy - like it was yesterday. Astonishing support. I only missed two games, (chicken pox), that season..... jeez, that was a great season. Our away support was ridiculously good.

Once we win the league this year, that means we've been champions of the 2nd tier 7 times. That's got to be in with a shout of being more than any other club. Can anyone confirm?

It'll equal Man City's record of 7

I can remember back to the 79-80 season but my favourite has to be the Micky Adams season because of the transfer embargo and the backs to the wall attitude of the players and fans. Just a shame we fizzled out right at the end after promotion was confirmed. I'm hoping that doesn't happen this time and we can go on to win the title

I don't think you can beat O'neills version. 3 reasons why?

Watford away, last day, sell out whole end, muzzy scores infront of us, sticks on a fez, brilliant.

Stoke away, that goal, after pooles save in the 1st leg, brilliant.

That performance against palace, just watch it back see how well we played, that's nearly as good a performance as I have seen a Leicester side produce.

Ok so that's more than 3 reasons, let's say 3 games why, all crammed into a few weeks.

'79-80 was a crap time for many of us, economy was on it's knees, many of the factories in the city had laid people off or were closing, the whole place felt like it was coming to the end of an era..weather was crap that winter too...walking to Filbert Street was the only thing that felt good and I remember the atmosphere at the ground changing slowly every other week. The pitch wasn't always great but the team seemed to have a fighting spirit we knew was something special; there were some low attendances at the start but by the final quarter of the season the place was rocking...forest had it all in that era but Leicester were fantastic and I'll never forget being in the Kop that season...the City needed it and that team deserved it for the sheer determination they showed; like today's squad they a great rapport with us behind that goal..

Snap, 1979/80 my first proper season as well, and that last game of that season was one of only 2 times I ran on the Filbert St pitch.

You learn something new every day.

I didn't know England had adapted the three-points-per-win rule so early on. I've grown up with it being implemented over here in the mid-90ies.

And the other time?

Versus Oxford in May 1991 perhaps?

lol you got me!

Sometimes staying up can be better than going up. In 1991 we'd had nothing to celebrate for a decade. We partied late into the night after that game.
