Lionator Posted 2 April 2014 Posted 2 April 2014 Don't know how many people have seen this incident from last night. Ref Eddie Ilderton gets it terribly wrong probably because of his position and his linesman advises him on his decision. Ilderton then changes the decision and invites the player he sent off back on. Shows a lot of balls in my opinion especially in light of the Marriner incident at Chelsea. Does this now set a precedent? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76311484/MOV_0490.mp4
Dan Posted 2 April 2014 Posted 2 April 2014 The FA/FL will probably drop him as they're not big fans of common sense.

After all what are his assistants there for but to assist. Wasn't it a pass back to the goalkeeper?
Matt Posted 2 April 2014 Posted 2 April 2014 Fair play to him. Common sense prevails. I hadn't heard about or seen this until now, shame because you can't miss it when a referee makes a huge mistake (Which is fair enough) but this gets swept under the carpet, which is wrong.
Leicester1884Filbert Posted 2 April 2014 Posted 2 April 2014 remember when he reffed are game and was completely crap...
Captain... Posted 2 April 2014 Posted 2 April 2014 The right result in the end, regardless of how it came about, fair play for having the balls to admit his mistake and rectify it immediately, rather than hide behind the laws.
Father Ted Posted 2 April 2014 Posted 2 April 2014 A massive well done to that ref. As Dan said, I wouldn't be surprised to see the FA punish him for using common sense.
Unabomber Posted 2 April 2014 Posted 2 April 2014 I couldn't believe it when I saw the initial decision to award the pen, why didn't he consult his assistant in the first place?! Anyway good on him for not being a pussy and rectifying his horrific error, and it was pretty funny seeing him wave the boy back on.
Lionator Posted 2 April 2014 Author Posted 2 April 2014 remember when he reffed are game and was completely crap... he was apparently poor at Blackburn but in other games I remember him having great games. Hull and Bolton at home both spring to mind last season.
RowlattsFox Posted 2 April 2014 Posted 2 April 2014 Would have been easy for Lino to keep quiet as well so fair play to him for ensuring he spoke to ref even after the red was shown. Refs made a poor decision but at least he's had the balls to accept and change his mind.
Richard Posted 3 April 2014 Posted 3 April 2014 The ref couldn't have gone and asked his linesman first, the ball was in play and a call had to be made. He can't just blow his whistle without giving a decision and then wander over to his linesman to see whether to continue play or give a penalty.

Top marks to Ilderton for changing his mind. Should probably have booked the Brentford player for slamming the dropped ball out of play, but that might have been a step too far.
