Tonight's Embarrassment..

After tonight i do feel a slight embarrassment towards our club for the following reasons.

1- An extra 5,000ish fans turned out tonight seemingly expecting us to simply beat Brighton and then to have a party. From the start a large proportion of the fans didn't seem willing to create an atmosphere or possibly try and enjoy the fact we have secured promotion. Regardless of what was happening on the pitch the same fans (generally all around the ground) seemed even more reluctant to try and sing.

Some will say we were extremely poor on the pitch but come on, we have just got promoted its terrible for people to not enjoy it.

2- The old leaving early debate. Once again this may relate to the performance but why on earth does the majority feel the need to walk out of the ground on the 80th minute when presumably they're here to celebrate our clubs great achievement. I'm in among the SK1 bunch and we were jeered and flagged for singing 'Cheerio'; something which was warranted considering the circumstances of the season and not just one singular game. Obviously there are the exceptions of people who need to get to work or need to leave for personal reasons which is understandable however i aim this at those who left purely because they felt like it.

3- Our clubs actions to drastically increase the police presence at the game. A game such as this would normally warrant 10-15 police officers if not edging towards a police free fixture but with the club so determined to stop every possibility of a pitch invasion they seem to have spent vasts amounts of money on 100+ officers to circle the pitch (other than the west stand) whilst conducting their normal duties. The cost of this must run into £4-5,000 and i do feel this was not needed and the club should allow the fans to enjoy their return to the top flight as surely safety would NOT be compromised to an extent where spectators would be put at a risk.

I expect their to be a few comments calling me this and that but as a team and a community who have just secured promotion other clubs and football communities must be sitting their laughing at what could be deemed fickle actions by a lot of our fans. My one and only compliment goes to the fans who stayed and cheered our team for the final 10 minutes the kop was brilliant for the final period, as was everywhere else.

I couldn't agree with you more. I was at the back (pp) of sk1. People leaving in their droves. I swear they would leave 5 minutes early if we were in the champions league final.

Policing was horrendous and I made my comment about that on the radio post match.

Nobody leaves 10 minutes early when we're winning.

They feckin well do! Have a look round at any match at the KP on 80 mins win, lose or draw

Very true all of it. Police and stewarding too prevent fans from celebrating when every club does it is not on... Title clinching day is deffinetly being made sure pitch celebrations go ahead and no stopping us

Couldn't agree more. They do.

No time for anyone who leaves early.

That's the thing, they do. The last home game I was at, people were leaving before the 85 minute mark and we were winning 3-0. So they missed 5 or 6 minutes of the regulation time plus 3 or 4 minutes of stoppage. That means they've missed 10% of the game and thought nothing of it, but if tickets prices went up by 10% they'd be the first to fly off the handle. It beggars belief sometimes.

Exactly. Stay when you're 3-0 up or down.

I agree with 95% of the original post.

Bits that I partly disagree with:

- It wasn't "the majority" who walked out on the 80th minute, it was a minority...but far too big a minority! I find them absolutely pathetic. It's the equivalent of petulant schoolboys taking their cricket bats home if they're not allowed to win every time....and, looking around, a lot (not all) of the people leaving were grey-haired blokes even older than me! It wasn't just the usual minority who leave on 90 minutes to beat the traffic either. I don't approve of that, but these people (dozens upon dozens of them) left after the 4th Brighton goal....just because we were clearly going to lose....our first match for 21 games! Incredible!

- I was in SK2 and didn't hear anybody jeering the people who chanted "Cheerio!". In fact, many of the people around (and including) me joined in and most seemed to approve. Be careful not to start seeing yourselves as some sort of oppressed elite!

I must stress that I strongly agree with the OP overall, though.

Maybe it will be a galvanising moment of change? The noise may have been only average early on, but it was very loud in the Kop by the end - and the noise was spread much more widely than usual, well beyond the small groups usually involved.

Spot on Alf.

I've never seen our fans so galvanised by something off the field as the mass walk out tonight, maybe the time we dropped from the division against Man U and everyone spontaniously started applauding but not much in it.

There was a massive difference tonight between the usual "leave at 3-1 on 89 crowd" - this was a load who turned up for a party and didnt get their way, never in a million years was that supporters who had been here whenever they could for weeks on end. I slo heard no jeering of those singing Cheerio, much the opposite in fact.

Heard that all tonight. 'We're on the pitch' 'No-one will stop us etc.'

One person had the bottle to go on. Everyone all week talking about going on and having a pitch invasion, yet when it comes down to it no-one dared to.

Embarrassing.

I was in Sk1 mm tonight, and just got home. It's quite a trek on a midweek night game and I had no intention of leaving early. Sadly those that did only galvanised the majority of the Kop into making noise, which they mostly hadn't done for the first 80 mins. Those of us that stood at the back of the stand made great efforts throughout the game but the last 10 plus injury time was something else. Well done us, and great tempo with the singing too, much more old school than J & K block and more to my liking. To those that left early I say you pay your money and make your choice, I'd also say they're most likely to be regulars as those like me (occasional home, more away) always stay as its rare to be there at all. I didn't expect us to win tonight either, so I was there to see them and applaud the season they've delivered. I'll be back for the donny game.

Why should people want to sing? It's a football game, not "The Voice".
