The Premier League Table - 'English Goals Only'

So sad when the Champions of our top tier only had one English player starting their game on Sunday.

Something needs to be done.

That's what Greg Dyke is trying to do, but keeps getting shouted down lol.

No he isn't.

If he really wanted to implement anything to actually work he would force them to have so many English players in the starting eleven.

Plus it would risk the Premier League's place as the best league in the world so there is little incentive to do it.

Having more English players in the Premier League won't improve the quality of English players. If they're talented enough, they should be able to rise to the top.

Richest and most commercial you mean. It isn't the best.

La Liga this year will have the two European winners, the two teams in the Champions League final and Real Sociedad were the only Spanish team to exit Europe this season at the hands of a non-Spanish team.

The money is too important, the viewing figures are too important so we've tried to create some farcical League 3 where we'll just shove our young English talent and actually pretend we're doing something about it.

Germany and Spain have over 1,000 youth coaches in their league, we have just over 100. That might be a good place to start with regards to why we aren't producing as many good players as we can.

When our World Cup campaign is over, that will give us a good indication whether we have good quality coming through or not.

Agree with the lack of coaches but people can't have it both ways, people were ecstatic yesterday when they realised Leicester will get close to £60 million next season because of TV deals, well that comes at a price.

The most open, maybe. The most entertaining, debatable. But the best league in the world? Not a chance.

Look at Europe this year, Spanish teams made up 3 of the 4 teams in the final of the Europa League and Champions League with Real Madrid knocking out United, Barcelona knocking out Manchester City and Atletico knocking out Chelsea. In terms of quality right at the top of the table then Spain is miles ahead of where the Premier League is at the minute.

Furthermore, look at Germany, Bayern Munich are certainly a better team than anything we have in England, and the TV money they receive each year is less than what Cardiff got for finishing in 20th this season. The only reason why the Premier League attracts such big names is because teams have the money to do so.

The quality of coaching in England is worse than Spain and Germany because coaching badges are much cheaper in Europe than they are in England. If Greg Dyke really wanted more English players to play in the Premier League he needs to make coaching badges cheaper for those who want to do it, because the higher quality of coaching at the grassroots of the game gives players a much better chance of developing and making it professionally.

years ago there was a ruling only 3-4 non English players per team...seemed simple enough.

Pretty sure it would.

It would improve the quality, a lot of potentially great English players get overlooked, for cheaper foreign imports, even if those foreign players are terrible...

Daniel Sturridge is a great example how at both Chelsea and Man City he didn't get a chance because foreign players where just brought in or preferred.

I'm not sure - look at Italy and France - both have plenty of players from their own country in the top league and they're no better than what England have now. Spain and Germany also do and are much better so in the four top footballing leagues other than England that's 2 out of 4 you could argue have benefitted.

Spain also hadn't won anything in over 40 years until 2008, at a time when there were more foreign players in La Liga than ever before I'm sure.

As to the argument for the best league in the world... the top teams are obviously stronger in Spain but as a whole I think there's more quality in the Prem certainly. I watch quite a bit of Spanish football on the tele and went over to watch Betis - Seville in easter - the quality in that game was particularly bad - N'Diaye who couldn't get into Sunderland's team was the best player on the pitch and Betis outplayed Seville with ten men despite losing. It was just one performance but I couldn't believe that this was the same team who won the Europa League.

Lukaku also seems to be getting the same treatment as Sturridge so it may just be something that happens to younger players in general.
