My Windows key is on a sticker on the underside of the laptop.

Have you checked your computer for Windows stickers?

I built the PC my self so have no shiny stickers on this. I brought Windows XP professional a year ago, but it wont go into the setup screen when I boot the computer up.

Use the key(from the real version) with the dodgy version?

Okay, managed to get that problem sorted but, why the fuck are my internet pages still not loading? From a fresh install all I have done is loaded the LAN driver, the pages wont load until I have refreshed about 300 times, when they do load the graphics are missing, all the fonts on the pages are on the left hand side... if anyone, anyone at all can shed any light and help resolve this issue, Ill happily buy them a few beers.

You might just need to reset your ie options (if you are using that browser)

Go to the Control Panel, open Internet Options, select the Advanced tab, then Reset Internet Explorer settings.

Or this : Rightclick on the desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties - select the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings".

You could try a scannow as explained in link below, I have seen folks get their probs fixed with this. I think it sorts out windows file problems.

Scan Now

This might also help "How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP" in Microsoft Help and Support.

I don't know what any of the following means but might help!

Are you able to ping the site from the command prompt ?.

Multiple DNS Servers ?

Your ISP may have multiple DNS servers which can take turns answering request from browsers. They may rotate duties for each request, or you may have a specific DNS server for each session that you are logged into the internet. Each DNS server may be operating from a different version of the master DNS file from the Internic.

Cached DNS ?

Check with your ISP to see if they are using a "cached" (pronounced "cashed") DNS file, and how long it has been since it has been "flushed". Caching means that the server has a copy of recently requested domains in it's active memory so it will not have to access it's hard drive for new requests for domain names that it has recently retrieved. If you are browsing to a site that has been cached, even if the server has the correct info in it's DNS file, it may have a cached version that has the old information. This will mean that you will not be able to view your website until the cache has been flushed. Most ISP's flush their cache daily.

Corrupted DNS ?

Occasionally your ISP's DNS records will be corrupted. The ISP's DNS file can become corrupted if there was some loss during the data transfer, or part of the file was written to a bad sector on the DNS server's hard drive. While this is a rare occurrence, it has been known to happen, and will usually be fixed by waiting until the next update of your ISP's DNS file.

In the meantime you should flush your DNS.

Flush DNS

I am gonna stop posting now cos I am probably just wasting your time with crap that wont help!!

This site will be able to help you. They sorted my pc out once when I had alot of crap goin on with it. The link might not be the right thread, just go on their home page and see where you should post. Their admin team go through the posts and when they get round to you they do help.

Always start a new topic for your problem, don't post in someone elses topic and state in your title the jist of the problem and in your first post give them a description of what's wrong. I almost guarantee they will sort it for you

Whichever one is drawing blanks, the connection hasn't been configured.

Have you reinstalled the drivers for the wireless?

I think I may have found your problem.

You're using drugs designed for humans on inanimate objects. It just won't work.

HAve you hit it with a hammer yet? I once had a nail that wouldn't work and I hit it with a hammer. Result!

I've got a Phillips X58 Freevent Laptop with 2GBs of memory. I've been told I can upgrade to a further 4GBs over two slots but that I'd need to change from 32 bit to 64 bit if I go above 3GBs.

Questions:

What affect does using the 64 bit have on my pc?

Will it affect/be compatible with my existing software?

Is there a cost attached and where do I get it from?

Finally anyone know of a good inexpensive provider of memory other than Crucial who I have dealt with so far who are quoting £17.24 for 2GBs.

Thanks

I've just bought a 1gB memory upgrade opened the back of my PC to install it and there doesn't appear to be any spare sockets to put it in.

There's two sockets there but they've both got what looks like memory chips in them.

Ideas anyone?

What's the best way to ensure you're earthed when and if I get to install this memory.

MrG I do believe the earhing thing died away many years ago and it shouldn't be a problem now.

I also believe, with my limited knowledge of laptops, that they usually only ever have two slots for memory and you should have bought 2 gig sticks to get to 4 gig. I am not sure if you can use a 1gig and a 2gig or if you need a 1 gig and a 1gig or a 2 gig and a 2 gig.

But as I say I am no expert.

Thanks for that re the earthing it does say on the packaging to earth yourself in fact some of the packages had what looked like an earth lead in them, unfortunately not mine.

Re the memory yes I think you're right as I came to the same conclusion after I posted. I believe I can use a 2 /1 combo my problem is can I return the 1gB I've just bought as it was bubble packed and I've cut it open.

Whatever it's a pain in the arse.

I asked the guy at my local pc shop about earthing meself for the same thing and he said don't worry about that. I think if you want to though you just touch something metal before you do it. A radiator or summat

You can take the memory back as long as there is a sticker over the black strip thingys. If you don't take that off my local Maplin said you can return them

I would but it's only 1gB and I've already got two of them so it's no improvement.
