SOCCERROO FOX Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Not as excited as previous years, i think partly due to work commitments, WC and decline of Cadel Evans. But i'm sure once it starts i'll get around it more. Think it's Froomes to lose but think Mollema is a dark horse at least for the podium.

I've never really been into it but I really should make the effort given it's going about 5 minutes from my doorstep. Guess it will depend on if i go out Saturday night.

As for the event, I acknowledge the ability of the riders, it amazing what they do, but I've never really got road cycling as a spectator sport. For me the tour is a endurance event where the outcome is reported on the news, much like a trek across the North Pole, and I wouldn't sit and watch that.

Froome's destruction of all his rivals on the Ventoux last year, was one of the best bits of sport i've ever seen. That was then followed by them all taking turns at attacking him and trying to bully him out the lead. Plus all the mountain finishes, great views aswell as great sport.

Each to their own though isn't it. It's all subjective. We're all here because we like football, most people I work with don't, and say it's boring. I can sit and watch hours of tennis, golf, Formula 1 sports a lot of people would call boring, yet I can't really get into Rugby, a sport a lot of people I know are really into. It's just opinion, and that's my opinion of road cycle racing.

foreverfan Posted 6 July 2014 Posted 6 July 2014 Just back from watching the tour. In Leeds yesterday with 250,000 others and at the top of one of the climbs today. Had a fantastic time. Have seen it in Paris too but this was just great. Our dream is to be in the Alps one day.

Since the 1970s it's been relatively common to start abroad (3 times in the 70s, 4 in the 80s, 3 in the 90s, 4 in the 00s, and 3 times so far this decade) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tour_de_France#The_start_and_finish_of_the_Tour And next year it starts in the Netherlands.
