Moore Best of a Bad Bunch As Pearson Approval Drops

After the pride comes the fall, and it was certainly a big fall from the Chelsea performance as a makeshift City team were soundly beaten by League Two side Shrewsbury Town in the Capital One Cup 2nd Round on Tuesday night. Liam Moore was voted as City's best player but with a paltry rating of 5.07, it certainly was not a performance for the ages. Ben Hamer followed closely behind on his debut while Marcin Wasilewski rounded off the top three on his first start.

Anthony Knockaert will be grateful the 'Flop of the Match' award has been dropped from future match reports (see FAQ for reasons why) as he edged out debutant James Pearson to be voted as City's worst player. However with the whole team collecting an individual rating lower than that of any other this season, it can only go down as a very poor team display.

Despite City's performance, the fans were in a generous mood towards Shrewsbury Town, giving them the highest rating of any opposition City have faced so far this season. While the referee Simon Hooper did not fare particularly well, his no less than average rating suggests that in no way do the fans blame the officials for the result.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the results is the considerable drop in the approval rating for Nigel Pearson, with the manager dropping below 99% for the first time and down into the mid-80s. This drop likely results from the frustrations of those who feel the management have not strengthened enough in the transfer window, a frustration which Pearson has himself admitted to feeling. The lack of squad depth could not have been more tangible in the sub-par performance of many of the fringe players on Tuesday, and has manifested itself in what I personally hope are just knee-jerk reactions from the voting supporters.

Jesus, we were poor, but this result has not influenced my opinion and confidence in Nigel and his ability as our manager.

Down 13% is crazy.

It all depends on how you interpret/what you're voting for.

There were many extenuating circumstances affecting this performance but one of the key shortcomings was the performance and motivation of the squad regulars of which there were arguably 7/8 in the starting line up. Admittedly a manager can only do so much but those players were simply 'not up for it' and the manager has to take a fair share of the blame for that.

There's no place in this poll to 'measure' the manager's performance but i suspect many of those that marked him down and i was one did so because they felt he'd under performed not that we want him to go.

There's is no way i want shot of Pearson but I didn't feel like I could put a tick next to his name following that performance if that puts me in front of a firing squad so be it.

That Pearson stat happens to be even more ludicrous than I initially thought - I thought it meant how did he do in that game and that it had gone down to 85% against Shrewsbury which I thought was astonishingly high. 13% extra genuinely voted for him to go? I can only assume they were on the wind up.

86% approve of Pearson, I'd be surprised if Mourinho gets that from Chelsea fans. It's nothing to get wound up about.

Its the 13% drop after a League Cup match which winds people up. Ridiculous, I know everyone has the right to an opinion but after the season we've just had it should be 100%.

It seems clear some people don't understand what they're voting for and it needs clarifying. Surely it should be the managers performance for that game only?

Also it would be useful if there was a choice to say if you were at the game or watched on TV. It would protect the accuracy of the results and give an interestingly comparative insight into people's perceptions of a game from differing sources.

Appreciate the feedback Collymore and my thoughts are below.

It seems clear some people don't understand what they're voting for and it needs clarifying. Surely it should be the managers performance for that game only?

The question is titled 'Manager Approval' with the only options 'Stay' or 'Go'. Not sure what I can do to make it clearer than that and it can't be helped if people decide to use it in a different way to how it's intended. Maybe re-titling the question 'Manager Confidence' would make it clearer, I dunno.

Another option would be to have a separate question to rate the manager's performance for that particular game although I'm a bit reluctant to add in another question, not wanting to make it too long and put off people voting. Maybe I could add him in with the players so he gets a match rating in the same way, although I'm not sure what the point of this will be over the course of the season.

Personally I think the current way is the best method of measuring the manager's performance over the course of the season anyway but happy to add in something if people feel it's necessary. At the end of the day, there was a significantly higher quantity of people voting 'Go' than in previous weeks with significantly less voters so as I said in my report, hopefully just a knee-jerk reaction. I'd expect the % to be a lot higher at the weekend regardless of the result.

Also you can still give your 'Manager Approval' vote even if you didn't go to the game, all of the questions are optional to enable you to just answer this if you wanted. Will make that clearer when I put up the form after the Arsenal game.

This is a good idea which I have thought about adding in before but with the free version of the survey software I use, I don't think there is an easy way of filtering results by a particular answer without going through the responses one-by-one. I'm trying to keep the workload at a minimum so that there are no issues keeping this going in the long run.

think you're doing a great job, completely understand you wanting to keep work to a minimum.

Please take this as an academic appraisal, and potential ideas rather than any criticism as your work is greatly appreciated.

Could one way be to simply set up 3 versions, 1 for watching live, 1 for tv/stream, 1 for listened on radio? Appreciate this might delete the findings and personally I like the idea overall as it doesn't seem to dilute the findings. I find it difficult to disagree with the final results.

Re Manager, I agree with how it sounds, but it will take a lot for my confidence in np to falter, and so yes/no is too limited. Adding him as a player would at least show that he is getting better/worse, had a bad day at the office. We could just learn to ignore where he rates against the squad, just seems a better indicator than the yes/no.

Looking forward to across the board 10s after we demolish Arsenal
