Mancini never played at the world cup. He certainly never scored one of the  most memorable world cup goals.

Then again, convincing him to play at Filbert Street (assuming he'd seen Filbert Street before he signed) was a hell of an achievement.

People often forget that some of Peter Taylor's moves weren't all bad, including having us top of the Prem. for two weeks!

Mancini was definitely more of a diva and stomped around like he owned the place with his perfect hair and collar turned up, which I liked at the time to a certain extent.

I get the feeling Cambiasso is actually coming here to knuckle down and do a job though. It's totally different.

I might get shot down for this but I actually think our biggest coup was signing Collymore (who didn't disappoint) and on his day was as talented as both mentioned in this thread.

Collymore didn't disappoint?! Are you joking? Bar a few games where he really showed how much talent he had he was awful. Lazy with a terrible attitude

One of my favorite ever players pal. You can argue with me all night but I won't change my opinion.

Mancini was bigger surprise and was totally out of this world at the time. Prem was nowhere near as global and the money factor wasn't there.

Saying that, Cambiasso will be a better player though I think and be more involved. Also more of a sign of our aspirations vs. getting a short term name in to fill some space between playing and managerial career. Mancini was always a famous Anglophile.

Both pretty awesome signings in their own way.

Never understood this. Seems to be adored by a few of our fans so I thought "wow this guy must be good."

Oh.

At the time many had written him off not understanding the illness he had. To be fair I didn't really understand it too much at the time but I was so optimistic. I just remember the excitement of him signing, it  meant more to me than anyone else ever.

When Collymore was on top of his game he was he was unplayable, this was a mindset he'd get where he honestly believed no one deserved to be on the pitch with him, not even his team mates.

He probably never fully reached this with us. I remember seeing him one game, he wasn't having his finest game and then out of no where something just clicked, he dropped back into midfield and ran the show like I haven't witnessed from any footballer live or on TV. It only lasted 5 minutes but I was like Morpheus when he first realised Neo was the one for the first time.

Exceptional talent that we so lucky to see.

Is my memory misleading me or wasn't Mancini pretty pants for City?

100% agree. The guy on his day was brilliant, I was at the game where he broke his ankle and it was such a shame, but I enjoyed all the moments he played on the pitch in a Leicester Shirt. With regards Cambiasso vs Mancini - Cambiasso all the way for me.

That game with him and Heskey against Sunderland was just amazing. Then we sold Emile to Liverpool...

Peter Taylor was the worst thing to ever happen to this club and he deserves to be chucked in a pot of boiling glue!!! Us being top for two weeks was thanks to O'neils defence and an international break not his clueless management. Can't see how signing a past it player for a month who contributed very little can be described as anything other than pointless either.

Mancini didn't do anything of note in a City shirt...Four games..no goals..can't recall any assists...Hopefully Cambiasso will earn his corn.

Laurie Cunningham and Stan Collymore are the best players I've seen wear the City shirt. They conducted games.

They probably were two of the most talented players to pull on the royal blue.

Oh.

From that I guess you never saw him play, which is probably why you had the reaction.

I was just pointing out that while PT was overall a pretty disastrous appointment judging by his year's tenure at City, nevertheless getting Mancini in was a coup at the time and was a rather better move than PT's recruitment of the likes of carthorses Trevor Benjamin, Akinbadbuy and Junior Lewis - all in return for shipping out awesome players such as Walshy, Cottee, Ian Marshall and Collymore! The fact that we were top for those two weeks into October 2000 was purely incidental as you allude to, all thanks to the then international break and with the remnants of O'Neill's rock solid defence. All the same, Taylor was still a better managerial appointment than Sousa ever was!!

No no no.

Mancini was a very good player but Cambiasso is world class. Definitely an area we needed to strengthen in and one of the best in that role.

Are you saying Mancini wasn't world class? Mancini was one of Italian football''s greats.
