Dom_Harborough Fox Posted 16 October 2014 Posted 16 October 2014 Completely disagree with the idea of bringing Hamer in for Newcastle. No disrespect to the lad. He came in against Stoke & took his chance well, keeping a clean sheet but I don't think we're anywhere near the point where Schmeichel's place should be under threat yet. Kasper's been one of, if not the most reliable and consistent of performers for us over the last three and a bit years. He was outstanding in the Championship, winning our Player of the Year and Player's Player of the Year awards in his first season, being named in the Championship Team of the Year in 2012/13 & last year. He's now established himself as Denmark's number one keeper. Don't really know what more he could've achieved in his time here? Sure, the 'world class' calls from some are still massively premature when he's only just begun to compete at the highest level but in my opinion he's the best keeper we've had since Tim Flowers. If he'd dropped a clanger I could understand (slightly) more why doubts might creep in but his positioning for the free kick against Burnley was hardly up there with dropping the ball between your legs etc. Kasper's more than earned the right to the benefit of the doubt from us lot when he hits a poor run of form (which I don't believe he has yet).
Carlos88LCFC Posted 17 October 2014 Posted 17 October 2014 Hamer doesn't seem to be setting the world alight in training. No one in the box apart from 2 players, mistimed his run to get the ball and made no effort to get to the 2nd goal from Ulloa. To break into the first team you have to prove yourself in training. Yes, its only training I know.

Guest MattP Posted 17 October 2014 Posted 17 October 2014 Hamer. 1 PL appearence, 1 clean sheet, 1 victory. Now being critcised.
Captain... Posted 17 October 2014 Posted 17 October 2014 Hamer. 1 PL appearence, 1 clean sheet, 1 victory. Now being critcised. Don't forget one clip of him in training, we will start having warm up watch again like we did with Waghorn. Speaking of warming up, did anyone see the half time game Hamer and co were playing against Burnley, all the subs were playing keepy ups and whoever dropped it they all surrounded him and flicked his ears. Needless to say Hamer was poor at this, and should be never play for us again, he even missed Wood's ear with a flick...
Manwell Pablo Posted 17 October 2014 Posted 17 October 2014 Here's silly me judging Ben Hamer on 3 years at Charlton. I guess that's not allowed either?
Bert Posted 17 October 2014 Posted 17 October 2014 Idiotic. You pick the one complete howler he is guilty of committing during his time here as evidence of poor handling? You could find a clip of Neuer doing something similar if you tried hard enough. Are you telling me his handling is poor too? And for those doubting his distribution, what are you watching? Such an asset. His flat kicks out of his hands are priceless and his distribution off the ground 95% of the time is absolutely pinpoint. I'd say his long passing ability trumps that of some of our outfield players. Plus, just take a second to understand just how far his kicks off the floor in comparison to other keepers. I would love to see some stats on the average distance of his kicks compared to other PL keepers. It's such an advantage that we put the opposition on the back foot from a goal kick. We've scored so many goals out of nothing from exactly that and Kasper never gets the credit he deserves. I think as fans we have become accustomed to his kicks and take them as the standard. Just pay attention to it for a couple of games. Compare his kicks to his opposite number. You'll see what I mean. Many of us didn't actually doubt his distribution, just doubted your claim of it being "world class".
Guest MattP Posted 17 October 2014 Posted 17 October 2014 Here's silly me judging Ben Hamer on 3 years at Charlton. I guess that's not allowed either? Depends how much of them you have seen. I only saw him a handful of times and he seemed ok, Charlton fans seemed to have a lot of good to say about him as well which is unusual for some. I always think it's a tad harsh to judge players completely on performances at previous clubs as different players often excel under different management (Morgan under Pearson for example). Though I do appreciate a keepr shouldn't be too affected by that change as much as outfielders.

Well as I've said three years is a lot of TV games and every goal he let in in that three year period was broadcasted by the BBC. I wouldn't say he's not poor that's not what I am getting at, but Kasper is a much better keeper.
Guest MattP Posted 17 October 2014 Posted 17 October 2014 I wouldn't dispute that at all. Criticising Kasper doesn't mean you want him replaced with Hamer. The Dane would have to do a lot more things wrong before I called for that.
Dan Posted 17 October 2014 Posted 17 October 2014 I read an article the other month in one of the Sunday's that the average height of a keeper ten years back was 6ft 3 and it's now 6ft 6 No chance.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 17 October 2014 Posted 17 October 2014 To be a great 'keeper like Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton, you have to have the ability to read the game, as well as skill. Kasper does not have such an ability, but neither to most 'keepers nowadays. Sadly, he has been not at his best either this season. He needs to be dropped, and to work on his game more, and not to believe that he can just walk into the team, no matter how poorly he plays. I believe he needs a bit of a wake up call, before he gets back between the sticks, and hopefully that will fire him up, somewhat.

I get where you're coming from DT, but I think this depends on Kasper's personality. Some players will respond to being dropped by accepting it and seeing it as the proverbial kick up the arris. Other players will see it as a personal thing and get the hump, sculking off to sulk. Which type of personality is Schmeichel? I get the feeling he likes to be Number 1. He NEEDS to be number 1. With this type of player, a manager can often do better by having a quiet word with him behind closed doors than by very publically dropping him to make an example. I get the feeling, and its only a feeling, that Nige needs to tread quite carefully with Kasper. I was having this conversation last night in the boozer. Just imagine Kasper as a kid, being brought up in a house where his dad was bringing round the likes of Eric Cantona and Roy Keane to play on Fifa... He is used to big-time, expects big -time and being dropped for Ben Hamer may be the right thing to do, but could be the completely wrong thing to do. Tough job football management. Just a thought...
