Board Games (Not Scrabble or Snakes and Ladders)

Had my neighbours round a year go including a posh pensioner and someone spotted I had Cards Against Humanity insisting we played it.

I nearly died when she read the card ‘Shitting all over the floor like a bad bad girl’

All about the x-wing miniatures for me.

I have about 50 ships and a preference for flying Imperial ships (Tie-fighters, Tie Advanced (Vader's ship), Tie Interceptors, Tie Bombers... there's more but I won't bore you further lol ).

Tried this (or a variant thereof) not so long ago. Got absolutely crushed. Nice idea, reminded me of Warhammer, but in space :P

I would annihilate you.

"Wipe them out, 96% of them."

lol

Ah here it is! I KNEW there was a board game thread. If a newer one exists, I would love to be directed there.

I went to see a 'show' in Copenhagen in January where four comedians were playing 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons casually in front of a small audience.

Most of the content was satirical, but the DM and one of the players were obviously experienced players. There was even a supernerd cartoonist who was assisting with figurines, NPC roles and doing drawings and hashtags as the game went along. It lasted for about 2-3 hours and I thought it looked like a lot of fun.

I thought it looked piss easy and as a friend had asked (read: pressured) me a couple of weeks before to be a DM, I said OK.

I have never played D&D although I have plenty of experience with video games based on D&D rules, so the combat/stat system is not alien to me, but the roleplaying is!

On Wednesday I'll be playing with the aforementioned friend, one inexperienced friend and two highly experienced friends and run my first adventure (Against the Cult of the Reptile God).

It's fair to say I've been bitten by the bug since going to that show and have watched countless of Matt Colville videos and even got my wife hooked on Critical Role, which is really entertaining and engaging once you can overlook the fact that it's "just a game".

Anyone on here experienced with D&D and currently still playing/DM'ing?

Personally think it's a bit mean them making you DM if you've never done tabletop RPGs before. lol

Yeah, I suppose it is, but I need to start somewhere :) I will lean on an existing adventure and I expect them to behave nice and help me out here and there. The worst thing that could happen is that it will be a TPK or a one-off session, and I'm OK with that.

Playing lots of board games at the moment. Some of my favs...

  • Dead of Winter
  • Zombicide
  • Sushi Go
  • Catan
  • Carcasonne
  • One Night Ultimate Werewolf
  • Avalon - The Resistance
  • Bang: The Dice Game

Also recently bought Gloomhaven, which is an incredibly heavy game, but pretty good fun. Sadly, not had the time to really play it fully!

Surprised this topic has been dormant for so long. Surely there are a number of boardgame/ttrpg enthusiasts put there?

Has anyone been trying Daggerheart or any of the new competing systems to (One)D&D?

Great thread bump though never played Dagger heart. Big tabletop gamer for decades in general though, been rotating D&D and Call of Cthulu for decades with other odd TTRPGs here and there

Then board/card games, probably some general favourites)

Cosmic Encounter (still the best board game ever made for me)

Libertalia

Dominion

Ra/Tigres & Euphrates/Modern Art/Quest for El Dorado (although any top tier Reiner Knizia game is always a blast)

Clank! Catacombs

El Grande

Race for the Galaxy

I do enjoy the bigger euro games from time to time but it has to be with players who know the game and don’t know it well enough to wipe the floor with everyone else.

Games I've recently acquired and enjoyed....

Heat! Pedal to the Metal

Flamme Rouge

(Two superb racing games. F1 and cycling respectively.)

Azul

Spots

Wingspan

Special mention to a great and rather unique game in that it's 2 player co-op, Skyteam.

I looked at Heat and it looked very similar to an old Danish classic called Derby (Horse racing game) which was always a lot of fun.

I would love to get back into casual board games. The family situation doesn't quite allow it, but hopefully as the kids grow older, I will have more opportunities.

Right now I'm limited to online D&D with some at-the-table sessions happening monthly hopefully from September onwards.

Cosmic Encounter looks familiar, and I know Dominion, but the rest are new to me

Love Dominion.

I have 5-6 expansions and a special wooden inlay to fit them all into the original box. Which makes it by far and away my heaviest game lol

Yeh Dominion is one of those that they still keep pumping out expansions that there’s probably tens of thousands of cards these days. But they all add new mechanics and work together. By its sheer number of potential combinations of games you do get some dud games of it, but it’s one of those games that so easy to just play 4 or 5 times in a row in an evening that it doesn’t matter.

Cosmic Encounter is one of the classic and really influential “hobby games” from the 1970s that were even pre developers like Reiner Knizia, Wolfgang Kramer and games like 6 nimmt, Modern Art, Settlers of Catan, Bohnanza and El Grande which popularised “hobby games” in the early-mid 90s. Though Fantasy Flight games gave it a facelift about 15 years ago and made the definitive version of it.

We’ve been playing Wandering Towers a lot recently. Really fun game.

Not heard of that one, I'll look it up.

Recently acquired Skyteam, a superb 2 player co-op where you're a pilot and the other player is co-pilot.
