Has anyone else noticed this season that Danny drinkwater struggles to make a forward pass? Everything is either backwards or sideways.not having a go at him he's a very good player, just looks like he's low on confidence. Discuss....

I think drinkwater failed to make the step up within the first few games but the spurs game he had a brilliant game in my opinion, Pearson rested him v hull to save his confidence and form for Liverpool

I agree Drinkwater looked excellent vs Spurs and more like himself of the 13/14 season but I don't see NP changing the first winning side in 100 days to reaccomodate him. I think he'll play a role off the bench again today. Unless he plans to rest Cambiasso for the cup game (which I doubt as his experience and class are most valuable to us in the league) then I think Drinkwater will be on the bench. More of the same as against Spurs, if introduced, would be excellent though.

But we were awful against Hull and great against Spurs, and a lot of the greatness came from Drinkwater so wouldn't we rather play that well again than score early on and hope that Liverpool have as little luck as Hull against us and us against Spurs?

To pass the ball forward you have to have someone in front of you to pass to. Against the better teams we're playing this season they're marking our forwards better meaning the pass isn't always on.

Thought he was excellent against Spurs, back to the Drinkwater we all know. It's King that makes every pass backwards or sidewards.

We were particularly awful against Hull when Drinkwater came on for Cambiasso.

On the ball I didn't think there was much between them but the shape of our midfield totally melted when Cambiasso came off.

It's a problem with the whole team, although I do agree with the OP. Most of our forward passes are just hopeful long balls now - it's the biggest difference between this and last season (along with our complete inability to defend now!). DD is the most obvious name, but he does generally keep things ticking over better than the rest (bar Cambiasso, imo).

He has a good season every other season.

2012/13 crap

2013/14 amazing

2014/15 underwhelming

So therefore he will be playing for England next season

where does this myth that drinky is wonderful and king crap come from.

in this division possession can be important, if anything we need more of it and king helps that. did you not see his pass completion and pass map against arsenal I think it was earlier this season.

This. King was involved in everything against Spurs until he came off for James.

When we play 442 we generally do struggle to string passes together. When we played against man city with 3 central midfielders we definitely looked more in control of the game rather the hoofing the ball long. But mr pearson loves his 442.

Didn't say King was rubbish or anything. His pass completion and pass map is going to be excellent because he passes back and sidewards a lot. Nothing wrong with that, ball retention is key at times but in certain games he needs to go forward. I can remember West Ham away the other week, he got all the way to the edge of the area and went backwards.
