James. Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 HANG THE DJ!! No, not really. I'm not THAT ignorant and stupid. But I do have some concerns after watching him play and reading many of the comments on here. If my memory serves correctly (which it often doesn't) he's played in the 3 games I've been to so far this season - Palace, Plymouth and QPR. And in my opinion with the exception of a scrappy goal at Palace has looked ineffective in all 3 (I really didn't rate his performance against QPR, unlike some on here). This fits in with the general comments after the other matches. Yes he scored again against Watford but seems to struggle to make an impact and get into a game and looks a little lightweight. For the money we paid and could eventually pay I must say I had higher expectations of him than he has so far delivered. This makes me worried that we have bought a player living off a fading reputation and a fairly good return last season (albeit in a promotion winning side). We have a plethora of strikers of varying ability. I would like to see more intense competition for places and would consider recalling Fryatt to play alongside Hume. Like the good old days. It's still a little early to truly judge Campbell but on the evidence so far I'm definitely a little concerned.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 He is paid to get goals and i think he will do that, he will pounce on anything in the area a bit of a goal sneak as you will but i think we all know not to expect to much hard work or creating a great deal of oppurtunities but give him half a chance and he will score.
Bluefoxtim Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 I'm sure it was any other player (on a free or a nominal fee) he would have been dropped from the last few games. He's not really done anything of any value IMO
teblin Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 outside the box, not much use (though he won the free kick for sheehans goal) in the box cuases alot of problems.
Karlos Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 I dont think hell be a 20 goal a season man though, which is what we need!
Flynny Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Last night I thought he was shit. For the first 20 minutes. After that he was really very good and positioned himself well, but nothing was coming off for him and had almost every decision go against him. I honestly thought the ref had something against him. At the start of the game, I was saying he should be dropped, but on last nights evidence he should do a job for us. Eventually. Especially during away games when we're looking to attack on the counter. When we're pressing forward in numbers and dominating, his pace isn't quite as useful.
Darkzzz_ Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 The only thing he seemed to do is give free kicks away last night, but the thing with DJ is he will know where to be when it matters, you wouldnt say he is prolific but he will pick up the scrappy goals..which is what we need at times.
Ric Flair Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 He doesn't overly impress me but I think he's got something about him that will still see him scoring a goal every 3 or so games. He'll be alright. Not worth the £1.6 million though, but that's not his fault.

I reckon he just needs a bit more time in finding the net then they should come.

weggy1976 Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 When we signed him I did comment that is record at the Brum was less than impressive, albeit he wasn't a regular starter. But how the hell did his price tag treble/(quadruple on certain conditions). However, we need to judge him over a season and not 6 games. I don't think his partnership with De Vries is working, and maybe that is the area Megson needs to look at. If we are sticking with DJ then we need to play to his strengths, his pace, and give him good service. Thats what ahsn't happened yet, hence making him look worse than what he is.
The People's Hero Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Appreciate that these are 'reactions' rather than 'reflections' and with respect to JtB - he does point this out - this appears to be a prelim sort of report on his feelings for DJ after just a handful of games. I would warn against judging any of the new signings too quickly though, they are new to the area and have now played under 2 managers here... the club has been through quite some changes.
Leonisco Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 He looked pretty lightweight last night, got knocked off the ball quite a lot (on many occasions unfairly too, but he got **** all off the ref ). I think we've yet to see the best of him, he's not done badly but I'm not overly impressed so far.

I agree, particularly regarding the on and off the pitch changes. As I said it's still too early to truly judge what influence and impact he will have on our team. However I generally get a feel for a player after watching them a few times and although that sounds pretty vague I've just not been impressed with him. I worry that he's somewhat out of his depth and while he may score 10-15 goals I really hoped we'd have a striker that could offer more to the team than just poaching and a bit of pace. I hope I'm wrong. And I may well be.
Ric Flair Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 I have a gut feeling about Campbell that he'll score goals, lots of them. I don't know why I have this feeling because so far he's been fairly disappointing in his general performances and also I didn't rate him before he came here. But I think he'll be start to bang them in.

I hope I'm wrong. And I may well be. To add my two-penneth worth... I never rated DJ particularly highly. It was only when we were rumoured to be interested that I checked out some stats. Regardless of the fact he was playing in a successful, confident team last year, he still scored an impressive amount of goals considering the amount of (full) appearances he made IN THIS DIVISION. I'll reserve judgement, as I think many will do. Just as Fryatt has proved in the past though, he's capable of scoring goals in this division, we just need to get the balance and the formula right for him. Who is going to fit Megson's system best? Time will tell.
purpleronnie Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 As I've said before I never understood all the hype about a player who has done nothing.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 He has really disappointed me in the last three games, particularly at Plymouth and last night. He looks so slight that refs never give him anything because it looks like he's just been outmuscled even when there has actually been a foul in there.
Milky Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 When we eventually get round to playing two quality wingers things will hopefully pick up for him.
Kent Fox Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 I appreciate that MF wasn't on that long, but if a comparison could be made on performance, how did he compare? He got an assist, which is a bonus. Was he a threat at any time? Perhaps someone can throw in some player ratings so that we exiles know who is performing and who isn't.

There is already a player ratings thread. Campbell has the pace and the energy. Fryatt has the touch and the dribbling ability. Be nice if we could have a striker with all four really. Oh wait... he's playing on the right wing. :D (Before anyone says anything, I am glad he's playing there! But maybe if Kaebi or Ferreira can play right side then Hume could move back up top)

MDV or Cort to partner DJ OR Hume OR MF those are the choices we have for the start of games..

Would like to see two attacking fullbacks too, either Sheehan and Chambers or Sheehan and Stearman.
