Richie Wellens

I've been reading some articles on line this morning which quote Wellens following the match on Saturday, and I have to say I'm feeling a bit uncomfortable with some of the things he's saying. Hopefully it's just the papers slightly mis-quoting him and putting his comments in the wrong context.

Here are the links to the articles - see what you guys think:

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3205183/Leicester-1-Preston-0.html

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/championship/8100430/Leicester-City-manager-Sven-Goran-Eriksson-urged-to-avoid-turning-to-foreign-talent.html

I get what he's saying - that communication is key to a team and that therefore it'll take a bit longer for the foreign players who are learning English to settle in....but it's the way he's saying it! I'm also surprised that after Abe's brilliant performance at the weekend he's still saying stuff like that!! I just hope Wellens isn't another Wayne Brown in disguise!!

Or am I reading WAAAAAAAAY to much into it!?!?!

I don't think it is meant to come across as it does, did squirm a little bit reading that. I can see his point but needed to be worded a lot better

Yeh I'm thinking (hoping) it's just that!

Richie Wellens would do well to keep his mouth shut, because he is a God awful footballer and has been one of the main trouble makers within the camp this season. The problem for Fatso is in the last 2 games Abe has produced performances that are so far ahead of anything that waste of money has produced in his time here, so he'll be out on his arse to some northern non-entity like S****horpe in January.

Wellens has made a fair comment but players need a bit of time to learn the lingo and adapt.

However, if I was Wellens and wouldn't worry about Abi etc but should concentrate on his own performances I like Wellens but hes not been all that this season. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Wellens is rubbish, who cares what he thinks, I for one hope Sven will ship him out.

I think we should care what he is saying, it looks bad on the club as a whole. Even if he is crap and talks crap, it still doesn't look good at other people looking in.

He's not racist, he has just realised that better players are coming in and he's offski.

To question if the likes of RSC or Jo could do the job at this level :crylaugh:

He is, he's being terribly prejudice about Japan and Japanese players, in fact, I have a contact at the Sun who told me they left out him stating

"Everyone at the club finds it really weird that he likes Chiwawa for his pre-match meal, kind of freaks us out, especially me, as a northerner"

Shocking and disgusting. Because we all know, Japanese people eat dog (source, L1 thickos)

Being serious for a moment, I think he's just being honest. Who would deny that foreign players, not used to the league, weather, surroundings, language aren't going to take time to settle. Shown clarly by Abe only now starting to shine for us.

Maybe he feels a little threatened by the expected influx, but he is partly right, sometimes foreign players just don't settle, bringing 7-8 forgien players into the club in January might well unsettle the ship, especially if they do need time to bed in.

Honest assessment by him, but maybe he does need a little bit of media training.

Thought it was quite telling that Andy King's first thought after the goal on Saturday was to put his arm around Abe, and encourage him to join the celebration.

Don't think Richie would exhibit a similar attitude.

Yep, Wellens seems to be struggling for a first-team spot. Eriksson is making sure he gets the best player for each position.

Maybe it's a bit harsh on him, but he's been looking for his form ever since he came to the club.

I know he's a nitty-gritty footballer that works his socks off and one that can come up with the odd genius pass here and there.

Unfortunately enough, this season I haven't seen a lot of Wellens that would guarantee a place in the starting eleven.

In essence, guys like him and Fryatt are (partially) struggling right now because they've started to realize that there's better player material out there.

Better player material needed for a playoff push and beyond that.

OH GOOD! I didn't see that - THAT'S why King makes a good captain! :scarf:

Think he is right. He said that the club need players that will work hard, not players that will just sit back because they may be 'better' players.

And I don't know where 'Wellens is rubbish' is coming from. He is fantastic.

He says Newcastle had no star players. What about Coloccini and Jonás Gutiérrez?

Yeh I wondered that! You play in the world cup but you're not a star then eh!?!?

Don't want to open up the wrong can of worms, but, er, did I skim read it too quickly or is calling him a "racist little shit" a huge overreaction?

Don't think he said anything that severe. I do think he's being a hypocrite in regards claiming the team need to be bonding together and then speaking out about their flaws publicly to the tabloids but then that's another issue.

As much as I like Abe and I want him to do well here, the language barrier will be an issue and I hope he does work hard to learn.

No, it wasn't a huge overreaction, it was more of a sarcastic response on what some might interpret his comments to be.

Thought about putting a 'THIS IS CLEARLY' a joke smiley, but decided against it.

His point may have been somewhat clumsily stated, but it is an entirely valid one to make. Fact is that Wellens isn't a politician or academic, he's a footballer.

It's perfectly fair and obvious to say that it's going to take a player from Tokyo or Lisbon longer to settle in than players from Barnsley or Watford, it's just common sense. He isn't saying we shouldn't have foreign players, just that their integration into the squad will take longer because of linguistic and cultural differences. Under Pearson, almost all of our squad were either English or had played in England and were therefore easily able to integrate. If I moved over to Japan tomorrow and got a job there, I guarantee that as a newbie it would take me longer to get settled than a colleague from another Japanese city.

It might be a comments based on the players sousa bought in. He might simply be warning people that it was a difficult time getting everyone to gel and can see the same happening again.

Don't think it was racist at all, just common sense. Hasn't our very own new signing vassell stated he couldn't settle in turkey because of the language/cultural differences, no one has called him racist!

It took Ji-Sung Park an entire year to settle with PSV Eindhoven, but before he went to Manchester United, I take it he had already acclimatized with Western Europe and must've gotten English classes for more than 12 months.

It won't be any different with Yuki Abe, who's just left his native Japan for the very first time to play for a European club.

English-born and bred players like Wellens giving statements that make them appear as if they're against the influx of loanees or fully-signed players from outside the UK are plain silly.

It's a reflex and a poor point raised in the discussion revolving around quality.

I would like to see Wellens play in Japan, or even Germany for that matter. Oh wait, he can't be arsed to.

Within the context of English football, English players always find good reasons not to leave their comfy home cocoon, only to berate foreigners on how bad they adapt to the new surroundings.

He better start working on himself when it comes to "working hard".

In which case I'd more than salute him.
