Flynny Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 DJ Spins InLeicester City have beaten off competition from a host of Championship clubs to sign Birmingham City striker Dudley 'DJ' Campbell for a fee that could rise to £2.1million. Well known for his pace and eye for a goal, the 25-year-old hitman joins the Foxes on a four-year contract and becomes manager Martin Allen's 12th capture of the summer. Despite making only 20 starts during his first full season at St. Andrew's, Campbell scored an impressive 12 goals to play his part in the successful promotion bid. It was Allen who gave Campbell his first break in professional football, capturing the striker for £5,000 from non-league Yeading, where he had scored an incredible 83 times in 109 appearances, in January 2005. Campbell famously scored two goals to lead the Bees to victory over Premiership side Sunderland in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January 2006 - and just three days later he would become a Blues player in an initial £500,000 deal. The player joins up with former team-mates Stephen Clemence and Bruno N'Gotty, who have also made the move from St Andrew's to the Walkers Stadium this summer. City chairman Milan Mandaric said: "DJ is a player whom we have been chasing for some time and after long and exhausting negotiations we are delighted to have completed the deal. "This is a signing that really excites me and I believe he will be a great acquisition for Leicester City Football Club. He has great pace and he scores goals." Campbell began his career as a youth player at Aston Villa. Spells at Chesham, Stevenage and Billericay followed before he signed for Yeading in 2003. The £2.1million fee is the highest paid for a player by the club since the acquisition of Ian Walker for £2.5million from Tottenham Hotspur in 2001 Additional Info: Fee is 1.6 million over two years, with an additional 500k should we achieve promotion. (presumably within those two years?)

Babylon Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Why ask me that, do you actually think DJ represents value for money or something.Varney and sharp both went for less, Eastwood even went for less than that didn't he? We were linked with Job I bet he wasn't that much. And thats just putting into perspective for for you lot by using players people have suggested we sign. For 2 Million if we're talking domestically based I'd of gone for Heider Helguson. Although if you want me to start reeling off players in other countries I will happily do so. Why ask? Because you keep saying there is better without saying who is better. Varney and Sharp have a worse record in this league than him. We don't know how much job cost. Fryatt will go to fund DJ and Eastwood had been sold before we had even had an offer for him. Heider Helguson has gone to a premier team. It's the going rate end of story.
Cheese Me Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Rip off. Can't believe we paid so much. Good luck to the lad though, hope he does well for us
Joe. Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Well there you have it. Seems a good signing I think, if he gets the service he'll get the goals. Maybe a bit on expensive side, but you need to spend bigger to get a decent striker in these days. I'm happy with it.
City Fan Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Birminghams OS reckons 1.6million paid over 2 years. Presumably the extra 500K depends on promotion?
chili_con_carne Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 The fee isn't 2.1 million at all. It's 1.6 Million to be payed over 2 years, with a further 500K being paid if we gain promotion

Kent Fox Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Oh well *sigh* Here's here now. Let's hope he lives up to the hype / money. DJ
Babylon Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Apalling business if that does happen Why's that when Fryatt has a worse record in this league?
ronnup Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Apalling business if that does happen Surely we don't need to sell players to fund this purchase. We've got some money. Havent' spent anything yet
Simi Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 The fee isn't 2.1 million at all. It's 1.6 Million to be payed over 2 years, with a further 500K being paid if we gain promotion I think that's a good bit of business, considering Fryatt could be leaving for 1 million plus. Good signing.
Unabomber Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Apalling business if that does happen How did you come to that conclusion?
andyh1884 Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Surely we don't need to sell players to fund this purchase. We've got some money. Havent' spent anything yet What about the £750k on clemence and undisclosed fee for Kaebi?
Joe. Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Apalling business if that does happen Bloody hell it's not that bad. Ok, £2.1 million is a lot of money but we're only paying £1.6 million of that for definite anyway. Campbell has a better record than Fryatt in this league, last season alone he got 12 goals in 20 starts, impressive for a bit part player. You've got to face it that Fryatt's probably going to be on his way, and we've brought in a striker who's at least as good if not better.
STUHILL Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 The fee isn't 2.1 million at all. It's 1.6 Million to be payed over 2 years, with a further 500K being paid if we gain promotion I think that is a fair deal actually, taking in to account the price of strikers this season. 1.6 or more if we get promoted or he scores shitloads! I'm a lot happier with that than a straight 2.1million upfront! Good work Milan! Get Fowler in now and hold on to Fryatt. Ship out Hammond, Devries and Dodds and are strikeforce is looking very good!!!
Bryn Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 He averaged a goal every 1.6 games last season, probably the best goals/minute record in the Championship. Sounds alright to me.

MHLCFC Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Happy with that, MA obviosuly rates him and that good enough for me, maybe a bit over priced but if MM thinks he's worth it I'll go with that. I'd be very pleased if we had only paid 1.6m but if his goals can get us up he's defo worth the extra 500k. Good luck to the lad..

I think he will do well here, already knows the boss and has proved he can score in this league last season even when faced with limited opportunities. Well done MA and MM, thanks for giving us someone decent upfront.
Tabou Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Quality signing in my opinion! Hopefully not another Akinbyiyiyiyieeee
chili_con_carne Posted 20 July 2007 Posted 20 July 2007 Fryatt can piss off now we've signed Dudley, Hume and DJ up front is a dream partnership is it not? Sign Fowler then I can see something like this: -----------------------Nielson ---Chambers--------NGotty-------Kisnorbo--------Mattock ------------------Hellings/Weso -----Kaabi----------Kishishev-----------------Hayes ----------------------Hume ------------Campbell---------------Fowler
