Just go there, find a cheap hostel and explore the city for a few days and nights. It's awesome. Just make sure you speak French yourself or have a good translator at hand or expect to be brushed off on a constant basis... The French are not really known for liking Americans and Canadians (although they're two separate brands), and I guess it's not much different with the Brits...

The lass I sit next to at work is French so I've been learning. So far I've learnt that Penny from Inspector Gadget was called Sophie in the French version and also what the the French version of the "Truffle Shuffle" from the Goonies is. All essential. Another French girl in our office grew up in Paris so she's sending me an email with things to do.

Paris is the best city in the world. You shouldnt have a problem in the more touristy areas (Champs eleysee/Eiffel Tower/Hotels etc) with the language as most speak english but they do appreciate attempted french. Have fun lads.

Overpriced, overated, full of ignorant cooonts, probably the second most racist place i've ever been!! Food is ok, very cultural and is pretty!!!

then i would suggest going to what i believe is called the 'latin quarter', by the river near notre dame, i think? good food and a bit cheaper on the whole, if i remember right.

if you want a good visit of the city i would recommend notre dame, actually - we didn't manage the eifel tower, but ND was amazing as it is very central and you are not too high and, of course, you can see the tower within your vista.

also, if you like art, there is a great museum, basically the house of some mad french dude, but it's super weird and rather different to your normal art galleries - i do, however, forget the guys name, sorry

Have to say I thought Paris was a bit of a dump.

But the PSG V Marseille game I saw remains the best football experience I've ever had. Although I believe the so called crackdown on the ultras has had an effect.

It is the same with most cities around the world though, stray away from the centre and the tourist areas and you hit the poor inner city areas. I wouldn't say Paris was too bad when I went a few years ago personally, more desirable than some areas of London.

True, its strange because so many people state londons a dump but I've always found it really clean and its definately one of the greenest cities I've ever been too. I did live in London for a small amount of time and that wasn't the nicest place in London to live but it was a long time ago and since going back to the same area 2 years ago it was much nicer. Its definately better than other european/american cities I've been in.

Go up the Eiffel Tower at night, not in the day. For one, it's less crowded and two, Paris is pretty awesome all lit up.

Visit the Rive Gauche area of town too, tis the trendy part.

Travel on the Metro - hundred times better than the tube.

I found Parisian fairly nice people. I think the tip is the same when visiting any country - remember that YOU are the foreigner and try and do what they do. As Ron Burgundy said, "when in Rome..."

Oh, and avoid the Pompadu Centre. Cultural cack!
