Why we would just do that with money we are paying an extreme (well exceeding the DoE rate) amount of interest for? To allow it to sit in the bank on lesser interest? We'd be losing x % of its value in such a move.

See you are missing one important part there. Cifuenties had a summer dealing with players wanting out of the club. Sometimes he was allowed to play players and other times he was told not to. At least two of them kicking their toys out of their pram. It wasn’t some rosy garden back in August. The performances weren’t even all that but he threw in a lot of youngsters across August who got decent results. It was unsurprising when all these players wanted off again in January, they downed tools and turned in some woeful performances after a decent December You keep harping back as though people are saying he’s a good manager but no one is.
