The Running Thread (formerly How fast can you run a 5k?)
HowardsBulletHeader replied to Sly's topic in General Chat
Set the half marathon plan in motion on my app last week, apprehensive, scared, all that jazz. Any tips from anyone? Keep in mind 4 months ago I wasn't running at all and my target was (and still is!) to run the Rothley 10k! -
I know we are going back a page here and I am always wary posting in this thread, I am by no means the best person for this as fortunately for me I have not had to suffer with depression, but the exercise part of this message is 100% right. During COVID I really noticed how much my mental health and exercise were linked, it really is as simple for me as if I don't exercise, I'm unhappy/stressed/carrying whatever the day has thrown at me into the remainder of it. However, the minute I go for a run or a walk or to the gym or play a sport all of that just evaporates. The Friday just gone for example, I had a hideous day at work and mentally I was so fed up, 7.5km later my mental state had completely changed. I know to some people going from zero to 7.5km would be too much, but honestly if anyone is struggling mentally I would recommend getting outdoors and do some form of exercise. Find a park and walk round it, or take up running or a sport or whatever takes your fancy. It doesn't have to be much, start small with a 20 minute walk at your pace, the benefits are incredible. I think a lot of people are put off by thinking they have to do X or Y or something drastic to see the benefit, I'd challenge that as even my 15-20 walks during my lunch hour at work make me feel so much better for the remaining time. I'd love you all to exercise and feel the same. As Sheff says, please consider it, it can and it will change your life.

Blimey, where on Earth has that Leicester been ALL season? Organised, tenacious, disruptive at the right times. Quality passing, runners off the ball, a threat to the opposition. Pretty much everything we usually aren't. Can only be due to revert to our usual standard second half and allow these to win 2-1.

Finished my training plan a little later than I should have due to snow.. I did my "10k race run" today and it was 3 minutes slower than my PB which was annoying but according to Strava as a result of a hillier route. Strava giving me the sympathy vote I think! Nonetheless, I powered on for my longest ever run, 15k. If you'd have asked me 4 months ago, I'd have laughed if you had said I could do it. Feeling tight in the glute area so clearly work to do fitness/strength wise to be able to run that far again, even though I did it, it felt like I wasn't ready for it. Enjoying running though, never taken to it before and eyeing up another pair of trainers already, rude not to, right? -
Yeah on a cruise mate, end of August.

Until this team actually starts running and putting the opposition under some pressure we won't win games consistently. They've shown no signs of doing that whatsoever, all season, so it'll be an easy day out with their cigar and slippers on for Cov. Horrifically depressing to even think that these will walk all over us, but they will.

Part way, doing it on a cruise for a week so definitely not going to get to see everything but excited nonetheless. We really want to do Flam and that's included, so we are happy with the itinerary.

Booked to do the Norwegian Fjords, excited for that!

Not really the area that Debs was after but a second vote for Peppervines, really good food, always enjoyed it there.

I've had this, now I've done a 5k at just under 25 minutes it thinks my 10k could be a shade over 50 minutes which is just not going to happen at my current fitness level. I can only guess it will get more accurate over time with more data but it probably errs on the positive side to encourage people I guess! -
Frighteningly bad, but somehow a win. As much as I am incredibly disappointed with everything about the club at the moment, that's a HUGE 3 points to keep that gap from the drop zone. The pending points deduction will put us into our realistic position and then its down to the players to have the bottle to keep us up.

It's just indicative of where we are. In sport, you make up shortfalls in your performance by either: A) Ability and quality B) Effort We've got neither the ability, nor the quality and its awful to watch. Bar the odd wonder goal and Jordan James who isn't even our player for ****s sake, we have nothing.

I'm between Fiona and Sam, even before tonight's episode I thought them so I'm sticking to my guns.

Anyone got any recommendations for trail running shoes? I have Asics Novablast 5s for my normal running if that offers any help to anyone. -

Completed a parkrun in Scarborough today, jesus they are popular. Got to be 300+ runners there, not that my time matters or it makes a load of difference but must've took 2 minutes to get off the start line! Great fun though nonetheless! -
Much more aggressive and showed fight which improved his performance somewhat, but that same aggression cost him with some naive decisions which Nelson bailed him out of on a number of occasions. The defence is just full of people who have brain farts, not convinced he will ever be good enough but mid-table Championship is our level now so he's ok for that.

That's so so impressive mate, massive achievement both in the running and the weight loss. All the best for the marathon! -

After running my first ever 10k two weeks ago, I'd been doing 5ks to try and get that pace up ahead of another 10k attempt. 5k record down from 27:14 to 25:15 10k "record" (i.e attempt 2) down from 59:23 to 53:37. As good as that sounds to complete amateurs like me, I recognise the reality is slightly different. The 1st 10k was literally a "get round" job, so feels like I should start with 53:37 as my base time. I work a "desk" job so I'm getting more and more conscious about my fitness and keeping active, determined to bring them times down. First race I am targeting is the Rothley 10k, I know I can do the distance now, so I would love to do better than 55 minutes in an actual race, particularly as I suspect its far hillier than the routes I've been running so I need to revise my target time! Plenty of practice needed in 2026! -

Why, why, why. 9 off the over, you were batting beautifully, no need at all. The target was steadily coming down into view but just absolutely brainless moments again. -
Best goals we've seen at the King Power

Vardy's record breaker was similar, the 15 minutes of atmosphere that followed it were some of the best, but I agree with your comment about the Sevilla game too! -

The Vardy dink over World Cup winning goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is one of my favourites. It isn't the best goal at the KP probably because it just isn't overly flashy but I do think it should be up there. The cross is on the money but its one thing to have the thought, its another to then have the vision and the ability to execute, it is absolutely sublime. It is my favourite ever Vardy goal and contrary to popular opinion, I think WBA away the volley over the shoulder from Mahrez's pass is better than Liverpool at home. I understand the Liverpool one and it is unbelievably good in its own right but this Spurs one is executed to the highest degree with pinpoint accuracy making a complete mug of a goalkeeper that had just won a World Cup. Different level. Amazing to have that catalogue of goals to choose from though, an elite level finisher. -

Genuinely haven't enjoyed a home game as much as that in a VERY long time. Absolutely superb from every single one of them and a thoroughly deserved 3 points.- 200 replies

Ran my first ever 10k tonight and clearly I've got a mentality issue with running. Right before I went out tonight, I felt "this is having it tonight", I had no intention of aiming for a time given I'd never ran 10k before, I just wanted to run 10k and no matter what, it was happening. And I knew before I left the house I would do it, I have no idea why, it just was. Some days, I look at my plan and its 6, 7, 8k and my response is "oh that'll be a test", "that'll be tough going" but tonight was different. I ran and ran and I didn't check my KMs for as long as I felt physically possible, it worked a treat. My first look was at 9.64km and I was so happy, I knew I'd done it at that point. Not only that, I didn't believe I could currently run a 10k in under an hour and despite having no intention of pace, pulled out a 59:22. Nothing to most of you in here, but honestly everything to me, I am so proud of myself. Now to cut the time down! -
Agree with that, it's such a great place though I'd do my best to convince someone to never let it put you off. Super sights in Reykjavik and Northern Lights are just incredible to see in the flesh. We stumbled across Europe's largest darts bar as well which was a great find!

Been out of running for nearly 3 weeks because of a chest infection, tried a 5k first run back and posted a PB 27:32 (according to free Strava anyway). No idea how I managed it either, felt like I was still struggling from the chest infection when I was running despite feeling fine day to day. It has encouraged me a lot though, perhaps not as useless as I think I am!
