But then you take a step back and remember he’s an actual child, and you can’t morally place restrictions on what a child does. If he wants to go and do something else, you can’t really say “no, we own you!”. It’s not like an adult who can sign contracts that result in obligations. It’s therefore contingent on clubs to do what they can to encourage promising youngsters to stay with the club by offering the best environment and opportunities. Monga, for instance, is having a decent private education paid for by the club. (Incidentally he won’t be going anywhere at this moment in time because he’s doing his GCSEs.) Also, remember that the majority of academy kids get binned off ruthlessly, so you can’t really blame kids for jumping ship too.
