He was also very lucky to join a team growing as it did, with the personalities that were around him, while he made the transition from skinny kid from Le Havre, and put his skills before a genuinely global audience. Lots of serendipity, and a happy outcome for all, but it wasn’t like he emerged as the ghost of Pele and chose to bestow his genius on little Leicester. We worked very well for each other, and he’d do well to reflect on that next time he feels like having a go.

You didn’t read the OP then. It’s not that my opinion of the tattoo is especially relevant, but it is about how I respond to a friend asking about something I will struggle to pretend to like. An actual friend who I want to be nice to regardless of what I think. Was hoping for some helpful responses and got some.

Yeah, I really hope it gets finer when the scars fade. I don’t think it’s right to share her photos without her say so, and getting it would very much defeat the purpose… She does know what I think. I just don’t understand anyone thinking their favourite haircut or favourite item of clothing right now is the one they want to wear every day for the rest of their life, and it’s basically the same thing. But I know people do, and some really love them. My worry is that she’s a middle class white girl with classics degrees from Oxford, just recovering from a fairly serious and sustained bout of anxiety, and it’s part euphoria, part rebellion, and it’s a short term decision she’ll regret. But I failed to dissuade her, so trying to be supportive is the next best thing…

I think it has to be this. She’s already texted “Go on - you hate it” and I’ve not replied. Ok. I think I’m going with “Wow, it’s huge! It’s not an immediate epiphany, but I do like it more each time I look at it. I’m really pleased you’re happy with it.” Which, aside from liking it more, is essentially true, and I think I can get away with. Thanks for all replies.

A very good friend has just got her first ever tattoo and she’s really pleased with it. It’s a big vine (accurately drawn, as we’re in wine) over her whole shoulder and down her left arm. I was worried it was quite big for her first tattoo, but she’s been really excited. I don’t like tattoos in general, which doesn’t matter at all, it’s entirely her choice and if it makes her happy I’m delighted. But she does know my prejudice. But this morning she sent me a photo of it almost finished, and it’s really ugly. Huge and dense and basically half a sleeve plus collarbone. And I don’t know how to reply. I don’t think I can sustain a lie, but at the same time she’s obviously thrilled about it and I’d like to find a way to be encouraging. Have any of you got advice from similar situations? Either responding to people’s tattoos you haven’t liked, or people having handled not liking your tattoos in a good way. Thanks in advance and apologies for any offence caused.

I don’t buy this. If Rodgers hadn’t got his transfer plans in over the summer and was just thinking about things in pre-season, he was even worse than we thought. Maybe he thought ‘no money’ was a negotiation, but there’s no way you turn up in August, go “Top, sign me Kevin De Bruyne” and he says “sorry pal, you have £0” and that’s some sort of surprise…

Everyone getting prissy about a few fans being told to **** off has presumably never heard a football fan give it out to a player? Have it on extremely good authority that if we sack BR, we have to pay him 10m. If he is ‘poached’, we get 20m. So the only likely solution for him to actually go is that a club comes in and we compromise. Or he grows some dignity and leaves. I’d welcome Mark McGhee back at this point-at least that Judas bastard didn’t screw the club in order to force a sacking.

I’d love to have him play alongside Vardy. JV’s pace is on the wane, but his brain and passing is as good as ever, and he’s still quick. With someone else occupying the defence, both could be so effective. I’d love to see Kel become the fixture of CAM/10, and JV/PD play the number 9 next to him.
