There's several reasons but mostly it boils down to fact we over paid for players and gave them too large wages meaning not only can buying clubs not afford to pay the player enough to convince them to leave but it's also sometimes damaging to sell them. With amortisation, we don't pay the full value of a player up front when we buy him. We spread it out across his contract. So if we buy someone for 25m on a 5 year contract he actually costs us just 5m every season in the loss column. However, when we sell him we have to take a hit on his remaining value that same season. So if we sell him after one season, there'll be 20m still left to pay off. Meaning, if we only sell him for 10m because it turns out he's shit, we actually lose 10m this season instead of the 5 we would have. Plus, loaning clubs tend to cover a lot and sometimes all of their wages and often a fee so it's a way of clawing back a little bit of the value. We'd obviously much rather sell players for profit, that's the idea, but in cases like Soumaré and Praet where we have these guys for years just loaning them out every season, it's basically cos we pay them so much in wages they don't want to go and we paid too much in transfer fee so we can't make any profit.

In fairness, one is a box to box central midfielder and the other isn't. You wouldn't be upset at Mads Hermansen if you found out he ran less in a match than Hamza Choudhury would you? Iheanacho's defensive work rate definitely is an obstacle that kept him out of the side but he still contributed goals and assists to the team at a very credible rate in the Premier League where Bouba Soumaré contributed, erm... I'll get back to you.

This is your daily reminder that this rumour came from Alan Nixon.

Jordans Country Crisp is the worst breakfast cereal on the market. It's like eating sawdust. It's still a better Jordan than Jordan Ayew.

... that's what's supposed to happen? You can dislike the tactic all you want but that's just a footballer carrying out instructions. Our strikers did it all last year. It's a three man move designed to move the ball vertically, quickly. A deeper lying player - Vestergaard or Hermansen ideally but sometimes Winks, slots it forward to someone with their back to goal, usually the striker. That player then lays it back first time to a midfielder. You can even then have the midfielder immediately play a second vertical pass to a forward running in behind, say Mavididi. Some of our best goals last year came from these patterns of play. Go watch any Guardiola or Arteta team. See how many times a player receives the ball with back to goal and actually turns on it, especially under any kind of pressure. They just don't. You'll frequently see the likes of Bernardo Silva get the ball from a Stones or Rodri in a wide area and just play the ball back first time instead of turning.

In our current financial position, I'd take him for 7 over O'Riley for 30.
-
The BBC just parrot any rumour that's in the tabloids.
-
Couple of weeks ago it looked like the clouds were parting with Soulé and O'Riley. Now it's Ayew and Doak Back to reality.

Why
-
I mean, he's a full back that just spent a year playing for a manager that doesn't play full backs.

Mods delete this now.

Until you realise the account was made 18 hours ago and it's blatantly one of @Miquel The Work Geordie hundred alts on the troll. -
I'm not even bothering arguing with you to be honest, Daka is objectively better than Cannon. I'm not suggesting Daka is the second coming of Ronaldo but Cannon has done very little in his career so far. Has no remarkable pace, strength or movement. He's an alright striker of a ball within twelve yards of goal and that's about it.

Last time he played in Ligue 1 he was a starting midfielder in a team that won the league and not with one of PSG, Monaco or Lyon. He'll do fine going back to France, you can see why French clubs think he'd be an alright bit of business for 10-15m.

Daka is a much better player?

If true, every time the press said "he really, really wants to go to Roma" what they actually meant was "his agent says he really, really wants to go to Roma"
