I couldn't disagree more. We need instant success and we should have a squad that dominates this level. The young players like Alves, Braybrooke, Aluko etc are easily good enough for this level and shouldn't need time to bed in. There simply won't be any patience from the fans at all I don't think. Maybe a few losses here and there throughout the season are acceptable but there is no way the fans are going to lap up defeats and put it down the squad bedding in - it'll be bedlam!

Yes 3 years is not ideal but this could be more about the position we're in rather than us not learning our lesson. If Burns was getting 1 or 2 year offers in the championship, then to come to L1 we're going to have offer 3 for him to consider it. If he has a blinder this season (which he should) we would be looking to extend anyway at a start of a Championship campaign... If I'm being super optimistic, it's not out of the realms of possibility that the club has a 3 year plan to get back into the Premier League - promotion this season and then 2 years to throw the kitchen sink at the Championship where we'd then have an out of contract Burns , probably considering retirement having done his bit over the 3 years to get us back to the big time. It feels different to the BDCR, Ayew signings because it was pretty obvious we were going to get relegated so they should have been offered 1 yr contract to have the honour of playing in the Premier League and fighting for a new contract. This feels a lot different and could end up working...

What I'd say with Monga is that if you're talking of players like Yamal or Bellingham they don't only have unbelievable talent, they have obscene confidence to back it up too. When Monga made those cameos in the Premier League I was so excited because it looked like he had a bit of swagger and confidence but ultimately that completely disappeared last season, I don't actually ever recall him speaking for a start! This is not a criticism, most 15/16 year olds wouldn't hack what's he done/doing but I had such high hopes at one point. I'd have been raging if we had sold him at the end of that Premier League season when we got relegated but seeing he didn't push on last season I think £10m was a very good price. I'm glad he stayed for that extra season to put my mind at rest as he could have taken the Championship by storm but at least now we know he wasn't ready.

Our model needs to change back to buying low cost young players, selling them on at a significant profit who also bring us success in the mean time. Also hopefully the youth setup will produce Chilwell, Barnes etc every now and then producing pure profit. I'd be now putting all available resources into a European scouting network. Our reputation will be high enough for players to remember our success, especially the parents of the players and we need to be pushing that on top of some of the best facilities in Europe. Once we can get a few examples of young players using us as a successful stepping stone, it'll then mean more and more good talent will want to come. Horrifying to think we have built Seagrave and let washed up journeymen use it as a holiday camp for so long.
