We are very good at nostalgia, though. If this place was around during the O'Neill years you would get seething post match threads after losing 3-0 at Derby, 3-0 at home to Coventry in the FA Cup, listless defeats to Wimbledon, Sheffield Wednesday etc.

We are going to see a lot about (or not) his coaching and attention to detail in the next few months. Southampton, as we know, are obsessed with playing out from the back and Enzo swamped them twice. Chelsea's keeper is awful with the ball- will we press him? Brighton are playing a ridiculously high line; perfect, you would have thought, for Mavididi, Fatawu and Buonanotte to exploit. I genuinely think if we had a proper go the fans would be less critical.

Almost as though putting young, exciting players in the team gives you a chance going forward.

We nullified them for long parts of both games last season and should have won both. Cannot see the same in a few weeks.

There was one the other day that had the teams playing 39 or 40 games.

A quirk of the fixture list this year has put matches between the expected bottom four on the same weekends. 21st Sep- Leicester v Everton, Saints v Ipswich 19th Oct- Ipswich v Everton, Saints v Leicester 2nd Nov- Ipswich v Leicester, Saints v Everton Return games on 1st Feb, 3rd May and 18th May. Could be huge.

It would but it just feels like so many of the matches between Man City and the lower sides are just a procession. I saw a comment the other day about teams just wanting to keep the score down whereas in the past you could go to Old Trafford and have half a chance. Hopefully it will change.

At some point I can see Premier League games being forfeited. If both clubs agree (usually a side with European commitments versus a struggler), I could envisage a situation where both teams settle for a 3-0. No issues with fixture congestion for the European club, the struggler can focus on other games and fans aren't charged to watch a dull, one sided contest, especially if the current gap continues to grow.

In the last 28 years we have finished in the top half of the top division on 10 occasions and been outside the top division for 12. We have spent comfortably more of the last 30 years in the top flight than not. Not really an anomoly.

I've just seen nothing to encourage me. We have a manager who has won a fifth of his last 60 league games. Everything is limping along. Poor performances masked by narrow scorelines. Players arguing. Odd selections. Truly dreadful first halves. Nothing personal but just cannot see anything about this that fits or will do well.

Way too good for this. Deserves a bigger move however much it hurts.

Basically this is the worst result. Lost the game, battered but not in final scoreline so we will have all the unlucky, unfortunate tags and we limp along to the next poor performance.
