“The situation of migrant rights in Thailand continues to be deplorable..."

On Monday, British activist Andy Hall was indicted for criminal defamation and computer crime in a case brought about by Thai pineapple company Natural Fruit. This follows two years of persecution, after Natural Fruit took the decision to target Andy for researching alleged labour abuses at one of their factories rather than investigate the claims.

We’re horrified by this decision, which not only violates Andy’s right to free expression but also undermines wider research into labour rights abuses in Thailand and the work of other activists.

We’re doing everything in our power to try to help him: last week, the Walk Free community sent over 300,000 emails to the Thai government, urging the authorities to do everything they can to get these charges dropped. We also delivered over 180,000 signatures calling for Andy’s release to Thai officials in Thailand and the UK.

In just a few weeks Andy will have to return to court where he will be charged and possibly detained pending bail. Will you join the international outcry in support of Andy and send a message to challenge this injustice?

Just because they have different cultures and norms ?

Is this your excuse for ISIS/IS, the IRA, the beligerence of the USA/China/Russia, the duplicity of the UK and many other examples.

No. Possibly because they have shocking human rights record.

And ours is excellent or have you forgotten the war in Iraq and the subsequent treatment of prisoners be it by our own forces or passing them to the US

Well we don't imprison people for 30 years, for slagging off the royal family.

No because they try to impose them on others.

If you grow up and live in Thailand then it's all you're used to and it's what is socially acceptable. Why should others do what ISIS/IRA etc. do and go into Thailand to try and impose upon them what they think is the right way to live.

If you're shocked by Thailand's human rights records there's about 100 countries whose records would shock you more. It's actually in the top third of the human development t index and if you took lese majeste away it would move up significantly. It's hardly Somalia.

Arguably lese majeste itself is or at least was necessary in order to maintain the King's social power which has been used numerous times to curtail serious violence. It's a fractured society and the King's influence has been necessary to keep the lid on the violence.

It's not necessary anymore though, the king has said so himself, but it's in the hands of politicians and Thai politicians are about as moral as their British counterparts, they like lese majeste because it means smear campaigns can get very effective very quickly.

Who was the City footballer with the pineapple hairdo?

Jamie Lawrence.

I knew this thread was good for something.

I should put him in the PYFPFL thread.

According to news reports, a safari theme park in Thailand has become a macabre tourist attraction for its orangutan kick boxing matches complete with simian round card girls. The report continues, the heavyweights of the jungle duke it out, female orangutans parade around in bikinis displaying the round number.

Why do they keep playing the "Welcome to Thailand Boys" video at the start of home games after what happened in the summer. Should replace it with the video of Jim going berserk.

Are you seriously scouring the Internet for negative news stories about Thailand and posting them here to try and build resentment towards the owners?

This is the most pathetic thread on the Internet, and that really is saying something. Get a life.

Wait, are you James Pearson? Tom Hopper?

I think it is more like Thailand knows how to shoot itself in the foot; repeatedly.

I should probably be posting this in the music thread, but hey. Great article about The Libertines recording in Thailand. I think Anthems for Doomed Youth is their best since the band's debut. I haven't clocked any other names recording in the country, but if anyone knows of one I'd be interested to hear?

Interesting piece from the University of Leicester about the Bangkok bomber and where the Thai police are looking.
