The Politics Thread

I think homes for people actually working should be the priority instead of spending billions more on welfare but there you go.

Something is wrong in society when a person working all week earning 18k can't afford a house but has to see his earnings taken away to house someone whose decided to pop out children to gain accommodation.

The Tories now do have a chance to spend some cash, it's not like Corbyn is going to base any of his arguments on debt or deficit.

They could buy a house - in the poverty stricken north of England or Wales.

Maybe we should stop brits emigrating who aren't going into skilled jobs abroad.

I swear some peoples obsessions about immigration only come from daily mail headlines.

I think we should stop Brits holidaying abroad.

No, some of them are fleeing persecution and war.

May did make that distinction if you listen to the speech, although her tubthumping over immigration is completely laughable given her record, there is only one way Britain can control it's borders and everyone knows what it is.

Enjoying this speech from Cameron, he seems more himself now he has a mandate from the country and has won an election, seems to be happier and more positive about the next term.

Totally agree. If you've got nothing to offer the country you want to emigrate to then they should be allowed to turn you away, no matter what nationality you are.

Yet all the british people that emigrate often aren't and I quote Fox92's  May's quote :D .... a skilled electrician, engineer or doctor"

Cameron wants total integration of immigrants, cultures and classes in this country...Mmmmmm not many poor or ethnics in HIS constituency though...I wonder why?

Everyone should want that, we don't have much of a future as a cohesive country if it doesn't happen. Problem is it's impossible with the current scale of migration (often with people whose culture is totally alien to ours) to achieve this.

I don't know Ronnie, it's not easy to emigrate outside of the EU without some skills to offer and the EU is closed to some extent due to the language barrier. I doubt there are very many Brits working abroad in unskilled positions.

I don't agree, and neither do others more knowledgeable than I.

Institute of Directors director general Simon Walker said he was "astonished" by the home secretary's "irresponsible rhetoric and pandering to anti-immigration sentiment".

"It is yet another example of the home secretary turning away the world's best and brightest, putting internal party politics ahead of the country, and helping our competitor economies instead of our own," he said, adding that "the myth of the job-stealing-immigrant is nonsense".

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's The World at One, John Cridland, of the CBI, said the government was ending up penalising skilled workers who "add hugely to the collective economic strength of the economy".

Refugee Council chief executive Maurice Wren said the asylum changes were "thoroughly chilling".

"Becoming a refugee is not solely the privilege of the poor or infirm," he said.

Amnesty International said the proposals would make it "harder and harder for desperate people to claim the protection they need".

The Refugees Council and Amnesty International didn't like the Tory rhetoric Ron? Well I never.

The people at the top of these organisations are probably just as out of touch as the top politicians are.

If you want to seriously look at our cities and claim mass immigration has been a huge success then by all means do so but don't expect much agreement, we have towns that are divided, communities living apart, even in successful places like Leicester we basically have one side of the City that's overwhelmingly white and the other side that isn't despite it being a 50/50 split overall.

If you think we can effectively import another city the size of Southampton every year into the country with no cohesion or service problems then you're in cloud cuckoo land, I know you've got a few quid and live in a nice area so it probably won't effect you but to millions of others it will.

I've been telling you this for about five years and you've never listened but to just porn scourn on these issues everytime the debate comes up and start shouting the usual stuff about the Daily Mail or resort to silly hyperbole about how we should stop people going on holiday really doesn't help the argument at all but you seem incapable of not doing it, you must have done it 100 times.

Cameron has just pretty much touched on this, you can get through life in Britain these days without even speaking English or meeting someone of a different culture if you wanted too, that is something that simply has to change. Stuff like this combined with passive tolerence leads to children being sent to Pakistan for things like FGM or being sent off to marry people they have never met, it simply has to stop.

That's the serious issue at stake here.

YIP...FGM Capital of Britain..

lol Is was a letter from "Bernard from Leicester" - It can't be the Bernie can it?

Bernard Harris from Leicester wrote to me before polling day and said this.

“Aged 82, this is possibly my last election.

“In my life I have foolishly voted Labour, believing it served the working class.

“How wrong I was. Labour is against all I aspire to.

“I am 100 per cent for a United Kingdom, a sound economy, free enterprise, a trading Europe and a decent standard of living.

“Only a Conservative Government will achieve this.”

Bernard, you found the right party – and I want many more to follow in your footsteps.

The really was the best speech he's ever given today, covered just how damaging divisive politics can be, tackled issues that Jeremy Corbyn wouldn't even dare to discuss and some incredible optimism, really hope they can follow through on as much of it as possible.

Even the left wing rags are praising the strength of it.

200.000 homes by 2020...that I would like to see both labour and tories have failed to build enough homes before.

They seemingly don't live in the real world.  Sure builders like the money straight away but low end small profits...can't see them being a fan of that.  Scrapping housing benefits too.  I really can't see the benfit (ahem) of this.   £250k 'affordable' homes :D

But Matt most people will live in areas where they are surrounded buy their own race including whites.  How do you stop that?  Force immigrants to live in predominantly white towns?  Force more white people to live amonst immigrants.....so your answer is simply stopping people coming here?   I have been listening but yet to see anything to change my mind, you look at all the negative sides and maybe I'm guilty of focusing on all the positive sides.  Independant stuides have shown overwhelming positive impact of EU immigration..

Well for a start in addition to private sector building, there should be a council housing programme to supplement this to fill in the gap - for those who cannot afford to buy and are trapped in high cost private rented sector.  Plus secure rental housing is still needed.

I do agree with getting rid of the stupid planning restrictions we have though...there ya go a positive comment about tory policy.

Stop using common sense and logic.

I read that the BBC were handed documents and evidence of corruption a few months ago and not done anything.

Can't understand why it was given to the BBC. An ex-RAF officer spent 13 years digging up dirt. Not sure which paper or source this is. I just skimmed the article for now.Perhaps Google will reveal more info from different sources for a balanced view.

So it's what the Tories are planning to do plus building council houses then? I love the idea of just being able to build a place for anyone struggling to pay rent but I don't see how a country 1.5trillion in debt still running a large deficit is going to be able to pay for this?

I'd also want to see us regain control of our borders as wel before we engage in a social house building project, we've already had benefit and health tourism, the last thing we would need is a wave of housing tourism.
