Indeed, if today's refereeing's going to set the standard for consistency it'll be hard to justify anyone being sent off again - ever! . Because if Spurs could get away with what amounted to be little more than an exercise in assault and battery at times - and not have a single player sent off - I reckon only something like murder or GBH at the very least would tip the scales. To think Danny Drinkwater will be missing a game for doing little more than twice brushing a hand across opponents - the sort of offences which would hardly have raised an eyebrow tonight. Was Clattenburg under instructions to give Spurs every chance to maintain their challenge because it certainly looked like it and how come not only the referee but linesmen as well could be so close, have such a seemingly good view and still hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil - nor even offer an informed opinion which might have sufficed to see justice done . What an appalling example it was. From the eye gouging, through the treading on the Fabrigas's hand, down to the sort of scything tackles which seemed more designed to leave opponents legless than to ever retrieve the ball, I don't think I've ever known officials act so leniently and unseeingly. Perhaps tomorrow we'll hear some sort of explanation because I see no excuse whatsoever.
