The AFCON Effect

Recommended Posts

Although there are still 2 more matchdays in AFCON qualifying remaining, Algeria and Ghana will undoubtedly make it to the big show.

The dates of the competition are January 14th - February 5th. This could see our Africans miss up to 5 league games and 3 more potential games (FA CUP 3R,4, League Cup Semi Leg 2.)

Our Africans are Mahrez, Schlupp, Amartey, and Dodoo. Not to mention African transfer targets.

How will we make it through those difficult 4 weeks? Does extra depth need to be found to get us through that competition?

Transfer thread??

How is this in the transfer thread?

Because right now it is relevant for transfer activity/targets.

It's not relevant at all for general Leicester discussion, not until at least November.

Pretty much. We know we're losing one of our big 3 for up to 10% of the season and as of now 2 seats on our bench. Dodoo is less important. We need a plan for that. That probably means a transfer. Also if we think we're signing a guy to start that's going to AFCON, that's 2 starters missing for a bunch of games. Every time a starter is out of the lineup, it makes at least 2 changes: one guy will come into the side and another will come onto the bench. Right now we're missing a starter and 2 subs. That's huge.

Knowing the Schlupp and Mahrez will be gone we need another winger. It's as simple as that. Gray can't fill the shoes of Mahrez, Schlupp, his own, and the new missing spots on the bench by himself. Seriously? What do you do? Put Vardy out there? Then play who up top? The striker we haven't signed yet? But let's face it, that's already a problem because Vardy is the best counter attacking striker in the world.  No, you bring in a guy. You plan for it because you know it's coming. AFCON means we need to sign at least another winger. It's a snowball effect.

We need another winger anyway? Dyer played a part early doors but was only on loan?

We'll have a minimum of 6 more games. More likely 8 (as I doubt we finish 4th in our group after being seeded to pot 1). We need 5 wingers. We probably have room for 6 in our squad since Gray is an U21.

In mid Jan, we will likely be down 2 wingers (unless either/both leave before... in which case we would need to replace them anyway).

Gray and Albrighton are great, but we often substitute our wingers and we could have a congested fixture list with the cups.

We can always wait until early January to access the situation, but if our targets will have been on a winter break, being forced to throw them into the first team won't be the greatest thing to do.

  • 3 months later...

                                           Kasepr/Zieler

Simson//Hernandez - Wes/Benny? - Huth/Was - Fuchs/Chilwell

Albrighton/Gray - Silva/King - Drinky/Mendy - Musa/Kapi (/Fuchs)

                           Vardy (/Musa) - Okazaki/Ulloa?

Should be good enough.

We replace Mahrez with Gray or Kapustka and that's basically it.

Even if Musa were going it wouldn't be a problem.

No Slimani, Amartey, or Schlupp too... but yeah, we have enough cover now I think.

Just decided to bump the thread up in case anyone was worried.

But none of them are regular starters (although I'd like to see Amartey hold his place admittedly.)

Mahrez, Amartey, Slimani, and Schlupp will probably all be usuals in the matchday squads. So that is 4 players we need cover for.

As discussed earlier in this thread, regardless if they start, we still need cover for them. We need quality players who'd make up the numbers on the bench, to come on as impact substitutes or just be there in case of injury.
