Countryfox Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 ...If Trump became US President and Boris Johnson became our PM? The end is nigh people, build your underground shelters, stock up on tinned food and fill up your iPods with REM If Trump became US leader, Corbyn became PM, Putin doubled his coke intake ... and that ugly little fooker in North Korea sat his big fat arse on the wrong button as he chased a few of his lady guards round the table ...
TiffToff88 Posted 24 June 2016 Author Posted 24 June 2016 Can I bring my own records please. No, we all have to put up with REM being depressing on a loop for the rest of our lives
purpleronnie Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 At least the yanks are too sensible to make Trump President, as for us...well...that's another story.
RedSoxUK Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 At least the yanks are too sensible to make Trump President, as for us...well...that's another story. I wouldn't be so sure.
Fox92 Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 No, we all have to put up with REM being depressing on a loop for the rest of our lives Ah man I was waiting at the door with my Joy Division records.
ST20 Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 At least the yanks are too sensible to make Trump President, as for us...well...that's another story. What makes you so certain about Trump not becoming president? Or is it pure conjecture?
leicsmac Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 I wouldn't be so sure. Based on the evidence of the past month, I wouldn't be either. Or global climate change/Yellowstone eruption/less likely other big event will do the job for us, because we made the same mistake most complex species before us did. What makes you so certain about Trump not becoming president? Or is it pure conjecture? For the purposes of this thread, the question that really should be asked is...do you think he'd make the world safer if he did?

For the purposes of this thread, the question that really should be asked is...do you think he'd make the world safer if he did? How are you equating the UK exiting Europe to the end of the world? A rather irrational response. Depends on what you're specifically implying by "safer"?
leicsmac Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 How are you equating the UK exiting Europe to the end of the world? A rather irrational response. Depends on what you're specifically implying by "safer"? I'm not. I'm making a general comment of the divisiveness of humanity as borne out by the events of history in general and the past few months in particular, the EU exit being just one of them. Not only does such division make humanity more likely to wipe itself out, it also allows the chance for another event to do it for us because we can't coordinate a response. As for 'safer', let's go with the above two definitions and say 'less likely to incite division that would lead to a mass casualty event, either in the US or elsewhere' and 'less likely to have a response to a global catastrophe fail because of divisive influence'.

I can't fathom your implication that Brexit is going to potentially end the world. I dare say the world has come up against bigger situations than this one and continued on.
leicsmac Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 I can't fathom your implication that Brexit is going to potentially end the world. I dare say the world has come up against bigger situations than this one and continued on. Perhaps you can't fathom it because that's not what I implied. It would be idiotic to suggest that Brexit would be responsible for an event further down the line that would cause the downfall of civilisation. What I said was that it was symbolic of the polarisation and division within humanity, along with many, many other events, that could lead to such a thing being possible in the future. As an addenum, my first post on this thread was regarding Trump getting elected - I'm not entirely sure where you got the Brexit angle from. Regarding your second sentence...humanity seems to think that we have a divine right to inhabit this planet. One day, through our own cause or some other cause, that's going to be proven emphatically false. Edit: As I have defined what I believe to be the term 'safer' in this case I wouldn't mind an answer to the question put above.

Yes, we know the world is going to end at some point, as it has been predicted through science.
Webbo Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 What's the betting that life goes on as before and nobody notices the difference?
leicsmac Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 Your first couple of sentences are completely contradictory. Yes, we know the world is going to end at some point, as it has been predicted through science. Apologies, perhaps I should clarify. Brexit alone won't be responsible for such an event, as I believe you implied that I was implying. The division that it and other events of similar type represent just might. I do hope that isn't contradictory. Edit: Oop, still waiting for an answer on that question above. Maybe this time? What's the betting that life goes on as before and nobody notices the difference? Well, it's not like the bookie will ever be able to pay out on that one will they?
Wymsey Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 What's the betting that life goes on as before and nobody notices the difference? Job centre queues will possibly be higher. Less people wanting to come to England illegally, knowing that it won't be as easy for many of them to stay in a newly non-EU country.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 What's the betting that life goes on as before and nobody notices the difference? My mates Vladislav and Tomasvaric will.
leicsmac Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 Oh, and unless you're talking about the Earth becoming uninhabitable (like it will in 800 million odd years), it is ENTIRELY possible for humans to be able to deal with the natural events that have offed species before us. But it's probable we'll just bicker and fight amongst ourselves until it's too late.

leicsmac Posted 24 June 2016 Posted 24 June 2016 Yes, I know. It was in reference to the sun exploding. Yeah, the Sun going red giant will definitely put a dampener on things. But that won't happen for 5 billion years, and in any case its luminosity will increase to the point that complex life is no longer possible on Earth within the next 800 million anyway.

Don't you worry about that. Recent events have shown that there are plenty of "simple" lifeforms all over the world. The simpletons will persevere!
