Shepherdess fits.  Shepherd for the guide and E, S and S for directions.

That's what I got.

I hadn't seen this thread before and I'm glad that I've found it as I've been doing cryptic crosswords for years.  I can now tap the brains of like-minded posters who will probably be able to get answers that have eluded me for ages.  Try this one for starters:

I pay a flying visit on a regular basis (7, 5)

For the first one the only word I can make is Americanised. (Possibly with a 'Z')

For the last one the only words that come to mind are freighted and fumigated - I have no idea how they fit cryptically - I don't do cryptic, sorry!

Pretty sure the second one is filigreed.

First is Americanized.

I can half see how filigreed works but I don't get how "ilig" fits the "one prisoner being embraced" part of the clue.

I can only think it is a mistake - i lag would work.(embraced by freed).

Empty river has favourite student inside.

Could the second be deplete?  The favourite student could be a pet but maybe it's cheating too much to split that word up within the answer also I have no idea how river would apply to that answer.

Edit:  Ooh the river Dee maybe?  Still doesn't explain the rogue L.

And so it was.

Keep posting these when you get a chance, I'm normally useless with cryptics so even getting one word is as good as completing an entire puzzle to me :P
