FLAN Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 Damaged my ankle almost 6 weeks ago now playing 5 a side. Heard a terrible crunch as I went over on the ankle but still managed to borrow some crutches for the old Trafford game the next day Had the cast removed yesterday and the fracture to the lateral maleolus has healed just fine. Unfortunately they identified an ATF ligament tear that also pulled a piece of bone off due to the severity of the fall! Has anyone else had a similar injury and how long did it take to get back to normal? I should be starting some physio with NHS and looking into options with my company healthcare plan. Am i in a Matty james or Joe Ledley scenario?
AyewJoking Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 more of a ledley king scenario i'd say. just a shame you arent paid tens of thousands of pounds a week.
ThurmastonFox Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 Go private. I did my ankle and went through 12 weeks of physio on NHS to rule out muscle caused issues. Went private, saw a specialist who told me Physio had been a waste of time and I had an orthoscopy to remove damaged bone and cartilage within a week
Nod.E Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 Sounds much worse than what I did, but a few years ago I did ankle ligament damage making a De Gea style save. I stuck my foot out, heel studs in the ground. I saved the shot with the tip of my toe which bent my ankle right back. I never actually had a full diagnosis other than 'it isn't broken' at the hospital when I went for an X-Ray. It took a good 5/6 months before I felt comfortable opening my body out and striking a ball at 100%. I think in general the ankle joint is a bit of a bugger for recovery.
notnow john Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 Sounds more like Mendy, didn't they find floating bone during rehab?
FLAN Posted 26 October 2016 Author Posted 26 October 2016 Thanks for the advice on going private. I'm trying to see if work plan covers me. When I first rang they said something about not covering ligament damage

DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 Both ankles removed on left foot, due to smashing my foot, and knee. Just metal work from top of toes to above knee. Long surgical nail through heel of foot and leg bone. Ten and a half months in plaster! A nightmare.
VLC86 Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 I've only ever had good ankle injuries to cant really comment.

Am i in a Matty james or Joe Ledley scenario? Depends how well you heal and how well they treat it. Ankle ligaments are feckers. Unfortunately if you end up in the NHS's hands and they aren't quite as clued up or tbh, bothered as a specialist sports physician would be about your playing career. In their defense they are there for more important reasons than rehabilitating amateur footballers though, their remit is to prioritize people who are actually suffering from things that are lowering their standard of living. I've had a mate with a injury not quite as bad as that, he got a bit of bone stuck in one of his ligaments they didn't pick it up for about 18 months..... He hasn't kicked a ball since and it was about 4/5 years ago now. That's probably partly down to inclination though. My advice would be get the best health care (private if poss) you can and follow their advice (even if it does end up being just NHS) I'd write off the next 3 months as totally off limits to football concentrate on getting better then see where you are then....tbh If I were in your shoe's I'd probably question the point in playing again this season.

ithuriel Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 I had a nasty ankle injury in my early thirties and it finished me playing football, apparently no breaks but it was never X-rayed, the Doc said I had strained, pulled and made a mess of my ligaments and that if I'd have broken it I would be better off Went over on my ankle with the opposing player and my goal keeper coming down on top of me, my ankle went up like a small football but I could still walk on it, until I tried getting up the next day and even the slightest movement was agony, like listening to One Direction.
Jimothy Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 Question about a bad ankle? Anyone know if Elvis Hammond posts on here?
Ollie93 Posted 27 October 2016 Posted 27 October 2016 Fractured my ankle and damaged ligaments last december, had a bit of bone floating around since. I might look into an orthoscopy now..

Aus Fox Posted 27 October 2016 Posted 27 October 2016 I did ankle ligaments about 10 years ago. I think I was in the Matty James camp and it took me about 2 years to be able to play again pain free. I made several comebacks when it felt good but as soon as I put any serious power behind a shot or pass it would break down again and I'd be in pain for weeks. Only got back into playing indoor about 3 years ago and been free of injury since, but was the end of me in the 11 a side game
