An old mate of mine were in a band together when we were teenagers, and thought it would be a laugh to re-record one of the demos we recorded around the early 2000s as a fun project.

I've used amp sims for a while now, mainly Waves GTR3 but I used it as an excuse to buy Amplitube 5.

It's absolutely INCREDIBLE. I'll never use my amp again! Anyone else used it? The tonal possibilities are absolutely endless.

Yup, I use it often 👍 wished I'd had all this clever stuff 'back in the day' 😦

Just got my hands on Mark Hoppus’ signature Jag bass. Build quality is better than Tom’s range, the sound is what I really wanted, but the neck profile is lovely, it’s not a particularly heavy bass either. I got the sunburst model but I’m going to have it refinished to hot pink. I’ve been told that they’re only releasing a few thousand so chuffed I got hold of one! I’ll post a picture once it’s been refinished.

Been busy working on some electronic stuff so I've barely touched mine in a couple of months and the strings have gone. Need to spend and afternoon cleaning and stringing and I can't be arsed.

Ooh! Which one?

It's an X-Sonic U Looper. I don't know a whole lot about it other than it's designed to work with modelling amps so connects via USB. The net result is that it can record the amp's different tones in the loops, if that makes sense. It just about does to me!

Oh I've heard of them from when I had a Yamaha THR30ii, hope you have a lot of fun with it! 👍

That's what I've got, did you not get along with it? I like it but I've never had the patience to really get the most out of it if I'm honest

I thought it was great, but I also have a Yamaha ThrC and found myself using that more, despite the lack of features compared to the 30.

Does anyone know of a good and trusted luthier on the area? My Les Paul desperately needs a set up, but it’s had a poor setup recently and is delicate, so I need someone with a sound track record and will likely do a good job!

Dan at Leicestershire Luthiers is awesome 👍 in Hathern though.

I 100% endorse this recommendation.

He really knows his stuff and will take the time to get it exactly how you want it

What Les Paul do you have, out of interest?

I'd quite like one but cannot really justify it and would probably have to get rid of something to make room (unless I hide it!).

The cost of a Gibson is a bit too ouch (even if I tell myself it's an investment) but the Epiphone 'Inspired by Gibson Custom Shop"range are tempting and starting to drop in price a bit

I’ve got a 2004 Gibson LP standard. It’s trans amber as well which is quite cool because they’re mainly either Garry Moore or Slash signature models.

It entirely depends what you want from the guitar, with a LP standard you’ve got a solid bodied mahogany guitar, but what would say is it’s worth changing some of the hardware, I changed my tuning pegs because the LP of that era was notorious for dropping out of tune easily. I also replaced the nut and the bridge for better quality ones. Which seems a bit daft considering the price of the guitar.

But the epiphone versions aren’t bad at all, plus if you’re not bothered about what’s written on the headstock, you can get a second hand Epiphone LP, and upgrade the hardware. What kind of style would you mainly play on it?

Absolutely second all of this. I still own a Les Paul Studio which is a tuning monster with rather primitive electronics. It's really worth spending more on a higher spec instrument so that you don't have to upgrade. There are however some superb copies to be found.  I had an 80s Tokai and it sounded wonderful (unbelievable sustain) and played beautifully. I also know two professional musicians that had endorsements with Epiphone and preferred them to Gibsons.

Also, a Les Paul is a heavy guitar, so can be slightly unwieldy if you every play long sets live.

Absolutely agree! Gibson prices jump all over the place, the standards have always been around the £1400 mark, then if you go for a custom shop, you’re looking at clearing £2000 comfortably.

But I do feel they should be upping their game when it comes to finishing their guitars at the entry level when they’re still over a grand!  I’ve got a 2004 Mexican Strat, and it remains my preferred guitar (it’s modded with new pickups and hardware), but even as a basic guitar it was an all round decent guitar.

The LP is a fantastic guitar, but needs a little bit of TLC, you need to build the LP to your taste, and you’re not wrong, they’re heavy guitars!!!

You'd be doing well to get a used Gibson Les Paul for £1400 these days, there aren't many the right side of £1600 at the moment.  Maybe not surprising as new ones are around the two grand mark with a discount. Trans Amber? Lovely. 2004 is supposedly a good year isn't it, although I've no idea how much difference there is between the 'good' years and 'bad' ones.

I'm very much an arsing around at home guitarist so another pro standard instrument is probably a bit silly, and a good Epiphone would I'm sure be more than good enough for me. I've seen the '59 'Inspired by....' one (supposedly the best) as low as £900, albeit not in my first choice colour, and that's getting close to being tempting. The Les Paul Custom in the same range is also getting cheaper, no surprise as I think they are a bit overpriced.

I listen to a fair bit of classic rock, I've got Teles and a Strat and it just feels like there's a gap that needs filling (that's what I tell myself anyway)

You’re not wrong, which is why I’ll be keeping hold of mine for ever…. Once you get a guitar like that you take it to your grave. It is nice, anything from that era! There’s not a major difference other than Gibson had some wood supply issues in recent years (hence the reported financial problems), so there was a period where the guitars wood wasn’t being sourced in their usual ways. But there’s not much in it to be fair.

Epiphones are decent guitars, like the Mexican or Indonesian strats the base of the guitar is there, but it probably needs a bit of tinkering to get it to a good standard….. this chap below, loads guitars with good hardware, in terms of solid bodies guitars, if you’ve got good hardware in it, it will sound great, no matter the wood or the model. If you were to get an affordable LP copy and loaded it with some high end pickups, it would sound amazing! As this shows (Gibson studio loaded with Fishmans Modern Fluence) great set of pickups!

White "Inspired by Gibson Custom shop" Epi Les Paul Custom down to £899 (RRP £1199). Don't think I'll bite in the current sale but it feels like only a matter of time

What about this? Only 18 grand for something that looks like a kid made 😳
