Guest MattP Posted 16 May 2017 Posted 16 May 2017 It was a grumble at Laura K, the big boo was for the channel 5 reporter before. Then after that a big cheer for the Morning Star guy who had a "question" that was basically an opinion that mainstream media was biased. Genuinely hilarious, never seen a manifesto launch like it.
Guest MattP Posted 16 May 2017 Posted 16 May 2017 Daily Mirror guy now getting booed what has he done wrong?

They really expect to collect every single penny trying to squeeze the most mobile in society. Least it's optimistic I suppose.

The booing was immediately after he posed the question about immigration. A general trend: objective questioning booed, subjective questioning cheered.

I think it's wrong... in the expenditure, there's no mention of additional money to the NHS - claimed as £30 billion in the manifesto. The only costing commitments in the health section of the figures relate to the car parking, nurses nurseries and social care commitments. Thats the first big hole I've found, because I was suprised no additional funding was mentioned.

They said they would nationalise the National Grid, Royal Mail and Water Companies and it's not even been mentioned. It's already started on the Daily Politics. Quote Andrew Neil: You said wait for the manifesto and now it's here, so after weeks of me asking now can I have an answer of how are you going to pay for the 40billion odd you'll need to renationalise the National Grid? Labour guy: John McDonnell will be spelling this out in detail over the coming days Knew this would happen, it's absolutely pathetic to be honest, surely they knew this was going to happen?

The nationlisations could be considered 'capital expenditure' (and probably should).. but the costings should include how much they think these ideas would cost AND provide a figure of how much it would cost to run / receipts expected to be received for year 1, 2, 3 etc after these areas came back into government. These figures would be largely useless because that would be such a hard thing to estimate to any certainty... but they should have at least thought about these things because renationalising will involve serious upfront and ongoing costs.
Guest MattP Posted 16 May 2017 Posted 16 May 2017 This is painful, they haven't even bothered to do the costings serious have they? Who the hell is this Andrew McDonald? I do feel for him. Talk about a lamb to the slaughter.
Jon the Hat Posted 16 May 2017 Posted 16 May 2017 It really has been put together by the two of them over a coffee in Jeremy's kitchen hasn't it? They googled some sources and had someone at party HQ tidy it up a bit.
The Floyd Posted 16 May 2017 Posted 16 May 2017 Some of the references/citing within the costings are very questionable: £1.6 billion offshore company property levy - 'available data sources' and 'independent assessment by tax specialists' Yield from VAT on private school fees - article from the Fabian Review in 2011 Proposed yield of £3.8 billion of corporate tax reliefs - 'anticipation'

Bobby Hundreds Posted 16 May 2017 Posted 16 May 2017 I'm amazed people don't realise that all parties' costings are built on horseshit and blind optimism.
SMX11 Posted 16 May 2017 Posted 16 May 2017 I am not sure why there is such an emphasis on whether the policies are 'costed'. They are so economically harmful and bad it makes no difference whether they are costed or not haha.

The problem here is this is not tweaking of the numbers, this is saying "we will spend an additional £47Bn, and here are some things we hope will possibly fill the massive hole that our spending will leave in our public finances". This is a hugely risky proposal. Plus what SMX11 said, this is also more likley to reduce tax take than increase it, so you could be looking at a £60-70Bn hole.

When you spend 24 months refusing to answer any economic questions because you promise to have a "fully costed" manifesto at election time it's probably best that you stick to it.
Guest MattP Posted 16 May 2017 Posted 16 May 2017 Can anyone find anything for finding of the 3,000 extra prison guards?
theessexfox Posted 16 May 2017 Posted 16 May 2017 "By creating a fairer system of taxation, tackling tax evasion and avoidance, and encouraging a fairer tax system, we are able to rebuild our NHS, social care, education and other services." Think they ran out of things to say.
