I'm home alone on Boxing Day while my children are at their Dad's, and I haven't got a ticket for Watford so I thought maybe I could put my time to good use and volunteer to help somewhere. I've had a Google obviously, and can't really see anything. The one place I did find the link doesn't work, so I've messaged them, but in the meantime I thought I'd ask here if anyone is involved with somewhere that might need some help? I'm in South Leicestershire.

I also saw somewhere that charities don't really like people just volunteering over Christmas, but I would like to find something to do.

Obviously only until the start of the game

That's the place I found, there's a link to an application form that wasn't working for me last night, so I've emailed them :) Hopefully they will get back to me

There's a phone number at the end of the article too if that helps.

Good on you. Fantastic.

Makes me question myself a little.

Phone them, get it done quickly - staff are pressed for time at this moment and hate having to plough through inboxes. Avoid the ones run by sanctimonious pseudo-pious hypocrites, if their imaginary friend in the sky existed people wouldn’t be freezing to death on the streets.

So, even though you don't believe in God, you're blaming him for stuff?

Or, to put it another way, humankind has really screwed up, so put your trust in them, there's no alternative.

Sounds hypocritically pseudo-pious to me.

Err, no.

Perhaps not, but you are taking a really broad brush to do your tarring with there, but then of course, because religion has caused so much suffering, anyone with a religious belief is a sanctimonious pseudo-pious hypocrite, in much the same way that all Arabs are death-embracing, unhygienic, misogynistic murders.

Judging people whilst knowing nothing about them, is, I think you'll find, essentially the main reason for most of the suffering in the world. Religion, nationality, race... these are just veils for the above. If more people thought about others, like the OP, world would be a better place.

Again, err, no.

Given that this thread is about volunteering at places working with the homeless, I am (I thought clearly) only referring to the ones run by sanctimonious pseudo-pious hypocrites. The ones where you can’t volunteer unless you are part of their church, the ones where they prosletize with every cup of soup and/or the ones where they encourage donating money to the church (of which only a part goes towards the homeless work).

I have extensive experience of this. If you wish to believe in a magic sky pixie that’s all fine and dandy, you practise self-delusion all you like, but when it begins to be imposed on others as a condition of giving or receiving help, as it does in a number of refuges and food centres, then I’m calling it for the bullshit it is.

Have a nice holiday season. Daggers out.

About 'Down Not Out', Leicester (think @Rincewind used to use them)?

Edit: Apologies, didn't know it was via the above Action Homeless link.

nice gesture.

if nothing else you could always pop into the city centre and have a wonder about to see if there's anyone camped out on the street.

I'm sure they'd appreciate a coffee, a turkey sandwich and a nice chat, if nothing else.

I had a snowboarding coat I didn't want a couple of years ago so I took a walk into the city and found the homeless guy I always say hello to and gave it to him for xmas - he was made up.

sometimes they're just happy to be chatted to like a normal human being. we're all one bad decision away from homelessness - it makes me sad we can't all be a little less judgemental and a bit more caring towards our homeless in this country.
