Learned this week that the Staropramen sold in Lidl is the genuine Czech stuff and not brewed in Burton.

Can’t get enough of Czech pilsners (Urquell etc) so at less than £2 a bottle it’s been a dangerous discovery.

Be very careful, not all Lidls do this.

Hinckley is one of the good ones.

You can tell if it’s the Czech stuff as it will say ‘Known for its balanced taste’ on the bottle neck.

The Burtonised stuff just says ‘perfectly balanced’.

Budvar is very good, too but yeah Pilsner Urquell is my favourite.

Yeah you do need to be careful, but thankfully there are a few tells, and thankfully the one in Coalville seems to stock the real stuff as well.

As you say one is the writing on the bottle neck, also if you look at the label the Czech stuff will say 'Imported and distributed in the UK by Molsen Coors' whereas the UK version will say brewed in the UK. The bottle lids are different as well and apparently the barcode on the Czech bottles starts with 859 as opposed to 50 if it's the Burton version.

Big fan of Budvar as well, but agree that Pilsner Urquell's the best, just wish you could get it on tap reguarly!

Did Sneinton Market pub crawl last weekend with Panthers ice hockey game sandwiched in middle.

Did King Billy, Partizan Tavern,  Bunkers Hill, The Bath Inn and Fox & Grapes.   Liked King Billy and Bunkers Hill best,  we rolled in Fox & Grapes just before last order so the atmosphere were bit lacking but reckon it got potential.   Was supposed to do two taprooms but one of them were closed and didn't have the time to do other.

Was a decent crawl with added entertainment of ice hockey as a bonus.

The king of train beers imo. Struggle to ever pass through St Pancras on the way back home without picking a couple up.

Is that the green one with like a bull on or something?

If so, I remember being pleasantly surprised thinking it wouldn't be any good based on how naff they look.

Oh yes, that's the one. Made famous by the old Spurs Away Days Youtoob vids.

Pint of Victoria Malaga on draught. Outstanding.

Leagues ahead of Estrella.

I know Estrella on draught is generally now brewed in the UK so that may account for most of the difference.

Galicia is #1

I’ve not had a Galicia on draught

It’s popping up more frequently, better Greene King pubs have it usually

I ran a half marathon last autumn in Spain and they had it (VM) on draught at the end of the race, I'd never had it before but it was very nice. I now try and hunt it out when in Spain

I'm just a lager drinker and enjoy finding new ones to try that I've never had before. Pretty much tried everything in the Eastern European shops and its now difficult to find anything new (to me). But I got 3 that are new to me over the weekend which was nice.

Taiwan Beer (From Taiwan, obviously) - not great.

Cisk Excel (from Malta) - not too bad.

Ichnusa Anima Sarda (Italian) - bloody lovely.

I quite like a Tsingtao but not had it for a few years as I couldn't find it anywhere local. Found an offer online for 12×640ml bottles with free next day delivery for 14 quid so got myself a box for the summer.

The standard Cisk is one of the harshest and most difficult lagers I’ve ever had. Thankfully there’s plenty of other choice in Valletta.

Have you ever been to the Offie in Clarendon Park or Harborough Stores? They’re the premier lager merchants locally

Been drinking much more lager than ale these days. Find it hits the spot more than ale and I don't feel as groggy the next morning. Plus makes me feel very continental and sophisticated.

The image won't upload because the file is too big but I was wound up at The Cradock on Saturday.

They had a screen with the beers they have on and it was like:

Staropramen Lezak | 5.2% | Prague

Madri | 4.6% | Toledo, La Sagra

Birra Moretti | 4.6% | Venezia

and so on, completely disingenuous. Everard's pubs are the pits

100% agree. They do the same thing in the Marquis. The beer choice in most Everards pubs is always poor and sometimes kept badly, aka Rutland and Derby.

They do some interesting stuff at the brewery and then they just almost never distribute it in their pubs? The tank lager is excellent and quite unique yet they won't do anything with it. Their lack of guest beers is rubbish too, if they reciprocated with other breweries they'd managed to shift more of their own gear.

Shocked and appalled. It's "El Alma de Madrid" for a reason!!!!

Everybody knows Madri isn’t Spanish (yet some bores regale with you this as if it’s hot off the press) but passing beers off as imported from CZ and Italy when they’re brewed in Burton and Manchester takes the piss a bit.

Imitating craft style trappings with a beer board but it’s for macro lagers is just classic Everards missing the mark.
