I'm in syston and there seems to be a bit of a housefly infestation going on. My sister also lives in syston and is also having the same problem. They're driving me crazy. On the plus side they're keeping my dog busy while it's too hot to take her out for walks!

 

Anyone else in the area got issues with houseflies? Any idea where they're all coming from?

I live in Hinckley and we've had a real issue with bluebottles and houseflies this year. Obviously they're more noticeable because we have all the windows and conservatory doors open all day, but I've never experienced such a number as this year. We even found maggots in a block of cheese in the fridge the other day! How they got there I don't know because, although it had been opened, the cheese was in one of those resealable packs.

We've got a Venus flytrap yet not one fly has landed on it.

Opposite end of the town. I'm on the new(ish) barkby road estate.

 

Could possibly be coming from the rubbish dump at the Halfcroft? I guess the heat isn't helping with the problem

Eggs - which develop through the first to third larval stage into a maggot within about three days, then subsequently form a pupa becoming an adult housefly.

Used to have flies quite bad here, this year I bought a fly catcher from the closing sale at poundworld, been brilliant. Now we can sit, eat, drink in the garden with nothing bothering us. So good I went back and bought a load more. Only issue is I have no idea what to do with it now it's full, its ****ing disgusting, probably gonna wait til bin day and dump it in last minute. But I recommend them, work really well and are very cheap (think they were 50% off), might go get the rest before they close for good.

Lad at work said you can fill a sandwich bag with water and coppers and hang it up on an open patio door. Apparently they thinks it’s a wasp nest so stay away. Worth a go but might stop the ones who come in through the window leaving haha

I went to Barnsdale Gardens (the late Geoff Hamilton's) last year and they have dummy wasp's nests hanging from the trees in the orchard - apparently, wasps are territorial and it keeps wasps away from the fruit.

I actually got bit by one in Brugge and it was crazy, lasted for weeks.

Loads of flies this year; far more than normal. I reckon it's the dry, hot summer.

Serves me right but I have the bastard of all bites from taking the mutts out last night, pretty sure it’s a horsefly.

See a doctor if the area around it becomes red and swollen - cellulitis is potentially fatal.

I’ve got steroid cream from were I had eczema years ago so I just wack that in it and it goes pretty quickly.
