Webbo Posted 16 August 2018 Posted 16 August 2018 Following the sad news of her death today I thought I'd put a few of her biggest hits here.
Rocket-Ron Posted 16 August 2018 Posted 16 August 2018 Each time I go to bed I pray like Aretha Franklin.

Soup Posted 16 August 2018 Posted 16 August 2018 The most beautiful voice ever, effortless. Her cover of ' Bridge over troubled water' was on another level. Her kind will never be seen again. Very sad day
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 17 August 2018 Posted 17 August 2018 RIP Aretha Franklin one of the best singers the world has ever seen
Chico1958 Posted 17 August 2018 Posted 17 August 2018 Not really my genre However it's always sad when another music legend leaves this mortal coil RIP Aretha
kushiro Posted 17 August 2018 Posted 17 August 2018 The first time I really noticed Aretha was when Nicky Campbell played her version of YNWA on his late night programme on radio 1 after the Hillsbrough disaster. Then in the early 90s I read Peter Guralnick's book Sweet Soul Music which covers Aretha's 1967 breakthrough in great detail - after that I splashed out on the Queen of Soul box set -- the best of the Atlantic years. IMHO these two tracks represenrt some kind of peak in soul music - in music full stop really - the first one from the Amazing Grace album, recoreded in church, the second one from her collaboration with Curtis Mayfield in the mid 70s
Parafox Posted 17 August 2018 Posted 17 August 2018 Aretha Franklin, soul and gospel legend. Respect.
MrsJohnMurphy Posted 17 August 2018 Posted 17 August 2018 Got a few Aretha on vinyl, gonna get them out and give them a spin this weekend
kushiro Posted 19 August 2018 Posted 19 August 2018 Spent most of the weekend listening to her and reading about her. Here's the best track I heard, and the best article (actually from 2016): https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/04/04/aretha-franklins-american-soul
Vacamion Posted 13 May 2019 Posted 13 May 2019 I went to the cinema last night to see "Amazing Grace". It's the previously unreleased film of Aretha's gospel performance in 1972. Backed by a band, with a full gospel choir. It's unbelievably good. Moving, poignant and (even for a grizzled old atheist like me) the gospel songs as she performs them are full of uplifting beauty. Catch it if you can.

Biggest selling gospel recording of all time. Apparently when they did the recording they cocked up the sound and visuals so couldn't sync them. They now have technology to do it. Looks ace
