Nah not having it. We had 22,000 turn up at £12 a ticket. Playing bad should give you more of a incentive to get behind the lads. Ladies and gentlemen, modern day football fans for you right there ^^

Ladies and gentlemen, modern day football fans for you right there ^^ Yes I agree, but I think there is a reason it’s changed. The ground and match day experience has been pushed towards families to sell merchandise, and allegedly done that way to get away from the working class hooligan, and is now priced towards the working middle class. The relationship between the fans and players have changed, they are now multi millionaire super stars, not the low paid normal lads that we used to back, and could approach on a night out, Paul Ramsey pissed in the casino on a Friday night in town, so expectations of there performance has gone up with their wages. I could go on, but the point I am getting to is don’t blame the fans, blame the club, premier league that have created and encouraged the modern fan.

I wrote my dissertation about this back in the 90s and then completed a similar piece of work for my masters at a later date. The Taylor report, CCTV and banning orders, changes in social media and our use of it, countries owning football clubs and sky tv are absolutely key, but it’s difficult to ‘blame’ anyone due to the nature of how some of these things came about. And for the record, there was one conclusion about atmosphere related to ‘the singing end’ and its proximity to the away fans. We certainly should swap the family stand and the kop
Rusko187 Posted 10 March 2019 Posted 10 March 2019 Jobber was there, some chanting in L1 but yes it did go quiet in periods. Sorry I guess, I'll try harder in future.

HighPeakFox Posted 10 March 2019 Posted 10 March 2019 I got myself restricted for making a political allusion recently, so I'll try to be a little careful in what I say about this. I think that although @Monsell1976 makes some very fair observations in his last post, the problems don't stop there. We have a strange situation whereby, since Hillsborough, and even more since the absurdly wealthy owners came into the game, the emphasis has been to reduce the danger in attending football, and inevitably, there is a correlation between that and the atmosphere being affected in the long run. Football supporting has been pretty tribal, traditionally, and although I'm personally uncomfortable with many elements of tribalism, I can acknowledge the upside it can bring in terms of partisan support, atmosphere and so forth. Football is/has been 'tidied up', sanitised to make it more appealing to the casual follower, for TV, for the 'neutral' fan that has no strong feelings either way (when it comes to being passionate about an individual club anyway) and inevitably, the hardcore gets watered down, separated out and weakened. Trouble will still happen, but can be written off as an anomaly now, whereas it was once the norm. In seeking to drive the more extreme fans out of the game, a different problem has been created - that what is best for TV is put first, and anyone choosing to travel any distance to games does so at their own peril (financially and time spent, rather than being in physical danger). I have no real issue with the clackers we have/had, but I also recognise the reason they were introduced - it was an acknowledgement that something was missing, and I don't think much will be done to help re-introduce it. Those that have read Nick Hornby's 'Fever Pitch' might recall that he semi-predicts the hollowing out of atmosphere as TV takes over, and it would seem he was right. The one thing that hasn't changed over time, is that what is best for we ordinary fans is very low down the list of priorities for the powers that be (however they window dress it), and in that way, one could argue that football does reflect society, especially right now.
