Brendan Rodgers and Possession football

Recommended Posts

I am a Swansea fan and have fond memories of Rodgers being here. I've caught a few of your games and you already look to be playing his style, with neat, tidy, possession football..

Where do you think you're potential with this style is? Do you have the good technical ball players capable to do it? It looks like you do, just from watching a few odd games. You seem to have a lot of young talented players and I wouldn't be surprised to see you fight for top 6 (easily) and maybe even top 4 next year with possession rivalling the likes of Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Enjoy the ride.

We very much have the players who can play the Rodgers way. And if we keep Tielemans, even more so.

How was his defensive organisation at Swansea? His Liverpool side shipped a ton of goals in and ultimately that was his failing. His Celtic side got slapped around in the CL shipping 6 or 7 goals in. That's my one worry with Brendan. Will we be on the end of some embarrassing defeats away to top 4 sides.

Attacking wise we will be good and hopefully we will be flat track bullies (Puel couldn't break down lesser sides).

Fk CL,..fk..the past...BRodgers, has only got to give us decent ,some successful performances in the PL..

His next step in his career starts here at LCFC....

Many good/avg/ top managers  even at top clubs, get done by a few goals during their various tenures....

Ferguson,Simeon,Pep. Have seen their own great built sides get the odd walloping...

Too much OT T analysing,to try and find poor or even great historical snippets....

I don't know about you,but I stepped up in my jobs has I gathered experience...Even in competition sport, one shares the arena,

with guys/girls. Hitting the higher cut, after small let downs,or ones who just don't quite make the next stage, but still before pulling

their sporting/pastime plugs, they more often than not ,achieved personal bests!!!

Football management, has more just decent managers, through all the leagues..that is the NORM,few reach. MON/Rodgers/Gillies/Taylor levels

Even less, reach Capello,Beckenbauer/Ramsey/Pep /Enrique/Michels/Hitzfeld...etc..etc.. levels..And even then social-media allows some twonk still to have a snidey

Dig...

It should be noted that possession football wasn’t a Rodgers invention as we played possession under Puel too. However, it was safety first passing under Puel whereas we are creating far more chances with Rodgers. We start with a better tempo and play with more intensity which ironically was one of the buzzwords of the much maligned Puel.

To answer your question properly:

- Most of our players are comfortable on the ball and don’t just hoof it.

- But we are still often too timid and prefer to play it backwards to safety. The reason we want Tielemans to sign is that he’s our most forward thinking player. He does lose it a lot but equally he’s likely to provide the killer pass.

- Some players struggle under a high and fast press. Ndidi specifically has successfully been targeted by many teams.

- We don’t always grab control of the game. At our best a combination of Ndidi, Hamza, Maddison and Tielemans run the game. But they can’t yet do it every game. Teams looking to sign some of our players should note this - they aren’t yet the finished product.

- Our wide areas are our biggest room for improvement. Mahrez got 12 goals / 10 assists in his last season but Barnes, Gray, Albrighton, Ghezzal combined did not reach those numbers. Somehow the living legend that is Vardy still got 18 goals but if he was given assistance we’d tear it up.

Overall though everyone is very excited. I think preseason will help a lot and will expect the team to run a higher press than we currently do after the players are conditioned physically. I expect a new wide player and even if Tielemans doesn’t sign, we know they type of player we’ll need. As a result I’d be disappointed if we aren’t top 7 but it depends on other teams too. Someone might make a “holy crap!” type of signing like Man City / Chelsea did when their new owners came in.

I'm i'm being honest, our biggest defence was the fact we kept the ball so well. I think we had the 2nd highest average possession in whole league (Swansea City) , only below Arsenal in our first season in the premier league! Only criticism from our fans was the possession was stale and a lot of it was across the back four.

Have to say that I used to really enjoy watching Swansea back then. Your current side looks like it has a lot of potential too. You were so unlucky to lose to Man City in the Cup. Shame your owners don't seem the best - looks like your manager and Dan James will both be leaving.

Personally think we've looked a lot more organised under Rodgers than we have since the title season.

Peak Swansea were absolutely brilliant. They played some sensational stuff.

Rodgers isn't as much of a Tika taka purest now. I haven't seen it here as much but think taking a team mid season probably makes him a little skiddish about pushing it to hard.

We'll see after the summer. Really looking forward to a faster tempo and more confidence in keeping the ball. Feel that confidence keeping the ball really hurt us vs. Newcastle and Chelsea.

I know I'll get crap for it but we really need a Joe Allen type player with some goals to speed up the tempo.

Sorry about Potter and the asset strippers. Swansea got me started as a Rodgers fan and I'm thankful to them for that. Two years of great football.

You should burn your board and the strippers at the stake.

ironically we became more solid defensively under rodgers vs puel.  Especially in regards to the early game problem puel had with conceding goals.
