Yep Smith was rubbish opening in white ball cricket and is weak against the moving ball, would be silly to make him open.

Crawley is vice captain now Pope is dropped and there’s zero chance he’s being dropped.

I thought that was Brook tbh?

Ben McKinney is the one I thought would be next in line, might come too soon for him this summer but 214 not out today :appl:

He could score 502* and beat Lara’s record, they’re still not dropping Crawley and Duckett.

I think Crawley is under a bit of pressure now. You're probably right though !

Be funny when Crawley goes cheaply tomorrow when the opposition have gone 400 for 1 lol

Wanted Emilio Gay in the England set up for a while and he's started the season well, so no doubt we won't call him up

Only worry is that, like Duckett, he's batting three for his county and would be opening for England.

Suppose if the incumbent Test No.3 is currently better served never batting for his county at all then it's not a problem...

Sibley has started this season well too. Apparently he has a better offside game now (as in he has one !).

I reckon he'll get another chance.

He's opened a fair bit before though hasn't he, and like you say with this lot it likely doesn't matter anyway

They have 6 test matches this summer, I think they should give probs 3 of them a go at some point and see who can perform best under pressure. Gay should get first dibs, give McKinney a go and get Sibley back in the set up. 2 tests each, whoever adapts best, invest more time in them over the winter in South Africa. Though watch Crawley keep his place or they’ll do something stupid like open with Jamie Smith.

Yeah, being slightly facetious saying that and, as someone who thinks club No.3s who refuse to open are complete fannies, I'm fine with it.

Asa Tribe gets a bit of airtime.

An opener too.

I wouldn't mind as much if Bethell was actually playing in the IPL, last time I looked he was carrying drinks again.

Always going to have this issues with the way the IPL and early County season coincide.

This might be an unpopular opinion but think Bethell shouldn't be in the test side unless he plays more red ball.

I think it's a valid point, but l think unless he has a poor run of form they'll stick with him.

He is a serious talent, but l definitely think he needs county red ball cricket.

Not doubting his talent as scoring a ton in Aus is not mean feet.

It seems only Gay is pushing his case for form so far this season. Tribe n Mckinney not firing as much as fans would hope.

If the NZ game was tomorrow I'd guess we'd be looking at something like the following:

Sibley, Duckett, Gay, Root, Brook, Stokes, Rew, Ahmed, Atkinson, Tongue, Archer.

I'd rather have Rew tbh, we have too many ODI players in the test team and need some staying power to bat for longer periods.

Nothing against him unless he opens but I'm not sure I've seen him open for Surrey before.

Opening & keeping wicket is a tough ask at Test level.

I'd like to see what Rew can do at some point though.

I bet it will be the same sort of team as usual with maybe the odd exception as a token gesture.

Probably right. I think Crawley will be dropped though. Rightly so.

So an Australian, Marcus North, will be in charge of English selections. He has been around the county game for a bit to be fair but with him being Durham it just seems like Stokes as had a big say in it. Probably improves Emilio Gay's chances though.
