For once Talksport summed it up well with two points:

 

1 - Every U21 team has issues with players moving straight to the main squad. Its just what happens as manager as the U21s so its a bit a shit excuse from Boothroyd 

 

2 - He claims to have developed players from past squads like Maddison, Tomori, Calvert-Lewin. He didnt develop them, the clubs did ffs

 

To be honest, if I was as inept as him most of us would probably bullshit like he has and not resign in the hope of getting sacked with a chunky payout.

I love how Boothroyd is trying to claim credit for players progressing into the seniors. I think we can say pretty confidently that Foden, Mount and co making senior debuts has nothing to do with Aidy Boothroyd.

• Foden had played in the Champions League for Man City before he'd ever been picked for the U21s.
• Mount only made 4 appearances for the U21s before stepping up to the senior side - and 3 of those were at the failed U21 Euros in 2019. He'd already won Player of the tournaments at the U19 Euros in 2017.
• Maddison had 9 appearances for the U21s, but has himself publicly given a lot of credit for his development to his time at Coventry (and subsequently, Norwich and Rodgers) and as far as I can recall not said much about Boothroyd being a driving factor...
• DCL was playing for the Everton senior side before his first U21 call-up, and I'd imagine would credit Rooney with helping his development just as much as AB ever did. 

 

And so on and so forth. Of the ones who actually make it, very few of them have actually been 'developed' by Aidy Boothroyd in any meaningful way whatsoever.

I think his contract expires soon ( certainly before another tournament) so they could just let him go at the end of it. 

Knowing the FA they’ll give him a new one at a big increase then sack him after his next failed venture and pay him off

I guess the same can be said for any International manager.

 

How much of a role do they play developing players now club youth academies are so large and have loads of coaches helping youngsters day in day out ?
