3 red cards in the final minutes of the Spain / Italy game. That was the only highlight, as the game finished 0-0.

Didn't Italy get two sent off in their first game as well? Quite ill-disciplined bunch.

That is surely the end of Boothroyd now. The worst thing about England isn't just we appoint garbage but we stick with it for ages as well. Unbelievable that he kept his job after the last Euros let alone got another crack.

Boothroyd is obviously largely to blame but am I the only one looking at that under 21 side and thinking it’s not that special?

3 of the 4 defenders have virtually no top flight experience and the goalkeeper has been one of the worst in the Premier League this season.

The squad has 4 players playing semi-regularly for a side in the top 8 (and one of those is Tom Davies ffs) and, realistically, no more than 3 or 4 who are likely to regularly feature at the top end of the Premier League consistently in the future.

Obviously we were shit in 2019 too but that squad had Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Mount, Maddison, Foden and Barnes who are already playing at the top level regularly plus Tomori, Abraham and DCL who are getting there.

Is Ramsdale the best keeper we have in that age group?

I think Henderson is still eligible, so no.

I'd imagine when you look at the squads collectively to other top nations' U21 squads it's a pretty decent set of players based on their experience domestically.

You’re probably right, but I don’t look at that squad and think it should be doing much at a major tournament.

There's probably truth in both this squad not being all it's cracked up to be* and the manager still being inept.

* It's still a squad you would like to think could better Croatia / Switzerland, and not let in 3 goals to Andorra.

Yeah the squad is overrated, but they should be beating the likes of Switzerland. The talent France have coming through is frightening.

The U21 Euros is growing and we can’t still can’t make it out of the groups.

That Croatia goal could be a blessing if it means Boothroyd leaving.

Croatia had a player who plays in the 3rd tier of German football.

Amazing how Boothroyd got from taking Northampton to bottom of the football league to managing our under 21s, guy wouldn't get a job in the national league, complete fraud.

I'd love to see Lampard come in as u21 manager. He ticks all the boxes for me.

Ex England international who has played at the very highest level too and major tournaments.

Experience of bringing young players through before Chelsea started to spend big.

Has managed lower down the football league and done well.

Experienced the benefit of the loan system himself at Swansea which would be relatable.

He genuinely comes across as someone you would want to listen to and learn from.

He'd have an extra point to prove with England after not winning what his talent deserved.

Still young himself and has a long way to go in his career before he may feel he needs to get back into club football.

Compare this to Denmark's squad, who went on to win all three games, and the England squad should easily be semifinal material on paper. The attitude and setup is the major difference here.

The major issue is leaving it until the last game to play players in their actual positions. Before that....

- We had a centre back at right back when we had Max Aarons on the bench

- We had a right back at left back despite his brother... a left sided player.. being on the bench, and even then not actually selecting a specialist left back at all! I know he hasn't played much but you wonder how Luke Thomas doesn't get a look in when we apparently have Zero left backs.

- Emile Smith Rowe playing on the left despite being used as a 10 all season by Arsenal

- Selecting Tom Davies in any ****ing position is criminal

- Not selecting Harvey Elliott despite being one of the best players in the championship this season

I've no doubt someone with any sort of managerial intelligence could have at least got us to the summer stage, but yes, the squad and some of its individuals are over rated, and the majority of the very best players are already in the seniors.

I'd have more understanding if we'd done superbly in the last one, lost the best players to the seniors then collapsed in this one.

All this stuff about development is in the past- Southgate seemingly will pick any decent player from the age of 17, it seems, with Bellingham the prime example. It isn't as though you've got to play 10-15 U21 games then get moved up now.

It's about style of play and results and he's failed twice.
