James Justin suffers minor injury setback with Leicester City cautious over Wesley Fofana
The full-back was due to play for the Under-23s but his comeback is on hold while he overcomes a minor issue, while the centre-back may need to wait until the new year

James Justin has suffered a setback in his return from a long injury lay-off.

The full-back began full training earlier this month and it was hoped he would be able to ease himself back into match action with a run-out for Leicester City’s Under-23s.

But Justin has still not featured, and manager Brendan Rodgers has now revealed that the 23-year-old’s comeback has been put on hold while he recovers from a minor issue.

Rodgers expects him to be involved in training again within the next week, and he will then resume preparations for his first appearance at any level since damaging knee ligaments in February.

In that case, the development squad’s clash with Leeds this Friday will be too soon for Justin, so he may have to wait until the home game against Blackburn on December 17 before he gets to feature.

The manager said of Justin: “He was ahead of where he was going to be, then he trained with the group and for a few weeks there he was looking very good, and we were looking to get him into an Under-23s game.

“But he’s had a slight reaction to that, which has put him back. It’s not for too long, I would say in the next five to six days he will rejoin the squad.

“We just have to make sure after a long time out that, as much as we want him back, he’s ready to be back, and then we’ll get him playing step by step.

“Certainly when he does come back, and from what we saw from the few weeks he was back in training, he’s going to be brilliant.”

Justin is one of City’s two long-term absentees, along with centre-back Wesley Fofana.

The centre-back has been suggesting on social media that he could be back in action before the year is out following his horrendous leg break in August, but Rodgers does not expect to see him until 2022.

The manager added: “(Fofana) is working very well. We’re just cautious around that. He’s done so well and worked so hard. We’ll see where he’s at come the beginning of the new year.”

Given the pattern in the other recoveries, it's best not to expect either to be back to their best in time to make any big impact this year. Even when they're healed it'll be a big ask getting them back up to speed.

Absolutely spot on. Ricardo, Barnes and Maddison all took some time to get back up to pace again so I don't see why it would be any different with those two. I'm not expecting much from them till next season.

Having seen Ricardo my expectations for neither are high.

Obviously I’m not a professional but when I was out injured for about 6 months. I felt it took about that period to get back to where I was again ... possibly even longer.

Unfortunately fans struggle to hold that perspective when you’re losing games.

you see people writing off Ricardo as a wb or a winger... or thinking we should sell him, when we haven’t really got him back yet.

I really hope they get the patience they deserve.

I predicted a couple of weeks ago that despite being on target for December Fofana would magically only start making his come back in January and would probably not be fit by the time the transfer window closed. Coincidentally.

To be honest it will be a bonus if either get back to the level they were at before injury this season, but I’m not expecting that until next season.

We’re only just seeing Barnes and Maddison start firing again. Hopefully Ricardo will be next.

In the case of Justin and Fofana it’s just a shame that Vestergaard and Bertrand were such wasteful signings. I’m sure we’d feel a lot more comfortable if we’d got others to nurse us through to their return
