I agree. The big clubs in particular fill their squads with incredible depth of talent, then whinge every time they might have to field anything other than their first XI. And god forbid they ever give a young player a chance!

Pandemic or not, every December, it's exactly the same story from Klopp and Liverpool "There are too many games".

I'm almost sure the schedule for every year is pretty much the same and set out before the season even starts, but it crops up every single time.

It's boring. If they don't like the schedule, they don't have to enter every competition.

Tuchel is doing it now as well. Nobody cares, just get on with it. It's the same for every team.

The BBC have published a list today of who has the busiest festive period with hours between first and last kick-off. As usual, Liverpool are in one of the most favourable positions, 19th on the list out of 20.

I remember Klopp doing his song-and-dance two years ago (? it was two year, right? The Apocalypse has screwed with my internal calendar) he was in the FIFA World Club Cup and played his U23s for the League Cup quarterfinal against some lower league team. When it was suggested he let some first team players stay in Liverpool to anchor the team, he just went all "We are one squad! We can't split the team like that!" I really lost a lot of respect for him: FIFA rules are you can name a 23-man squad for that tournament, so he couldn't even play much of his squad, even if the rest of them got stomach flu.

Here is now you handle it Klopp: "Yes, the fixture congestion is tough, and this trip for the WCC is especially tough. But we are in this position because we have been successful, and other teams wish they were in this spot. Some of our younger players will get an opportunity in the League Cup, and I wish I could be on the bench with them, but that's impossible. But I know they will represent the club well."

I mean, ffs the U23's won the match! Then Klopp got his jetlagged team off the plane and came and kicked our butts at home. He seriously had no reason to complain.

(Frankly, I would expand the PL back to 22 teams, and really mess with his schedule. Trust me, Klopp would leave England the same day I was named football commissioner.)

Don't they now actually have to enter every competition? I thought they changed the rules the year after Manchester United skipped the FA Cup for the World Club Cup?

Another question: Do the League Cup and FA Cup have "senior team" rules? I seriously don't know, but when I was looking up the squad rules for the U21's in the Football League Trophy, I saw there were also rules for the League 1 and League 2 squads, in that they had to have a certain number of "senior team" members, based on having appeared in league match day squads. So they are literally not allowed to field their U21/youth teams in the competition.

It's my understanding that a clubs secretary has to confirm the entry in to competitions for the upcoming season.

I could be wrong though and happy to be corrected.

Can we stop this xenophobic bullshit? It has absolutely nothing to do with him being foreign. Alex Ferguson moaned about fixture congestion plenty in spite of being in a much better position to deal with it than any other manager. The manager of one of the clubs that are best placed for success is tasked with winning trophies and protecting their best players, and they have different ideas about how to do that, they're not there to appease fans of other clubs.
