The Running Thread (formerly How fast can you run a 5k?)

Post 2020 I’ve not really looked after myself. No excuse but I’m feeling the effects. Diet, exercise etc. enough is enough. Joined the gym and started my journey back to first running 5k and then 5k under 30 minutes. First day today - damn!

They will take your nib number and null your result.

I'm marshalling next week after running about 20 half marathons over the last 20 years  but at 53 it's just getting so hard.

Had some niggles so got an email asking if I would volunteer as a marshall.

Starts at 7 and ends at 1 so might have been easier doing the half after all🤣🤣.

Good luck to everyone next week, keep it easy this week and dont bomb down London Rd too quick at the start and run out of steam at Watermead!!!

How come headphones aren’t allowed?

Heath and safety incase Marshall's need to redirect runners/ emergency vehicles need access etc.

Posted sub-29 at Vicky Park Parkrun today for the 20th Anniversary. Had plenty left in the tank but started too far back so you end up practically walking the first half-K with congestion. My aim now is to post a sub-25 by the end of Spring. Hoping to do the Leicestershire half in February now IF and its a big IF I can keep on top of injuries and niggles.

Mo finished in 15:03 and consistently in that ballpark now so expect he'll be breaking his own 14:58 course record in the coming weeks. Amazing to see and makes me feel slow as fook.

If you willing to travel a bit more, Abbey Park is very quick for a park run and the wider paths make it far less congested. Along with being a lap and a bit means you don’t have to re pass people at the back.

I whipped around 24:05 yesterday and I’ve been nowhere near that sort of form recently

Was meant to be going 10 miles today but I’ve had a heavy cold all weekend so only plodded around for 5k. Means the furthest I’ll have run in the 3 weeks up to the half marathon is 10k, have I ****ed it?

10k for a half marathon  in a weeks time?

You've done less than half the length of the half marathon.

Honestly how do YOU think you are going to do, I'm sure you dont need us to tell you.

How are people training this week leading up to the half marathon? Is it worth doing a long run early in the week or take it easy on the legs and do a few slow short runs?

I’ve run half marathons as part of my training, just not in the last 3 weeks.

But to answer your question, probably going to piss it mate.

If you feel you've got 13 miles " in the tank" then you'll be okay.

You questioning youself a week away from the event isnt a good thing.

Imagine the mind games your going to be having yo deal with as your hitting the space centre with 3 miles left.( I've been there!, its horrible)

A week to go and any long runs ain't going to make much difference to "having it in the bank".

I tried a 10 mile a few days prior to a half and pulled a muscle.

Do a couple of nice short runs to keep the muscles going.

It’s not a question of whether I’ll do it ( I ran a marathon with zero training) but probably going to be more about how grim it will be to try to get the time I want.

Should be tapering now anyway, I'd do fook all for the week. Could do Parkrun Saturday to wake the legs up.

Two easy 5k’s for me this week. Probably won’t bother with park run cos I’ll end up racing it rather than doing a steady 27/28min.

Did 10k up and down a few hills to get the heart rate up but not sustained.

Generally worked well - try to be strict with sleep and start carb loading Wednesday onwards

Thank you, it’s a mental test as much as a physical one. Really helps me keep in shape.

I can imagine it does. I’ve pushed to do 1k in about 4 1/2 minutes and that’s enough for me.

My runs for this week are:

45 minutes recovery tomorrow after a race yesterday

An hours session including 4 sets of 5 mins at just above half marathon plan with 2 minutes recovery

Half an hour Thursday

parkrun Saturday (casual easy 30 minute run)

race day!

Who is running Leicester half? Im

torn between ‘racing’ and going for a PB or just having fun and clocking somewhere between 2:05-2:08ish

My first one so I'm just aiming to finish without stopping :D although I'd be disappointed below 2:30 I think.

Ahhhhh good luck and I hope you hit your target!

My issue is that I gauge my success on how many dogs I can stroke during a race
