I've signed up for the Leicester half marathon. Furthest I've ever ran is 15k I'm just under 90 mins. I'm thinking a comfortable time of around 2 hours 15 but I hear the last mile is a killer

You'll be fine man

Been on a few small runs as of late, as soon as I hit around 2km I get knee pain in bottom right of the right knee.. I assume this is a common runners niggle?

May I add, I didn’t warm up so maybe a rookie error. If this is due to not warming up, any reccomendations for simple warm up for dodgy knees? I am running on concrete roads.. have a 10km run round Silverstone in November so have to get used to the surface

Knee issues are the most common injuries in runners for sure.

Ive been really struggling with my right knee, this is on the outside and right in the joint. A few google searches and it sounds like an IT band issue. YouTube has been great for finding stretches which instantly relieve the pain and then how to strengthen it going forward.

The other most common one is Runners Knee. From experience I would say it’s likely to disappear after a short while if you want to run further but then you risk a worse injury I guess.

You are correct on the last mile. Your aim is more than achieveable on the basis of your 15k time. Running at an event can shave about 10 minutes off any expected time provided you don’t blow up and go off too fast

Get the blow up done early doors, before the race.

My race routine is:

Walk

First lot of stretches

Short sprints to blow up a little

Walk

Second stretches

Last half marathon my heart rate was hovering around 158 all the way around and I was pacing about 8:45 per mile.

Did my first ever 20k yesterday evening. Legs were absolutely done in by the end of it, and today I'm walking like I've soiled myself. Felt so ill for about 2 hours afterwards too lol took me about 2:07 so 2:15 in the Leicester HM might be a bit of a stretch!

You’ve only got another KM to go at that point, easily doable mate.

I think I said similar last week but I’m finding out how crucial fuelling before running is.

The 3 hardest runs I’ve done in ages have been 10ks when I’ve finished work because I don’t eat much at all during the day.

I've got a sprint triathlon tomorrow at East Leake and hoping to do the 5k run in 26 minutes or less. As for the Leicester half anywhere around the 2 hour mark I'll be happy with.

Did the Harbs park run this morning. First bit of outdoor running in ages and did 24.44 which I am over the moon with. Started at the back so the first 1k was bunched up and slow although that stopped me going out too hard. All ankles and knees ok I’m feeling proud of myself!

Absolutely gutted that I had to work this morning while a number of mates went and ran PBs at the Sheffield 10k. To consolidate the feeling I've got home, sat on my ass and done nothing lol

Need to get back out there and get off my arse.

Lovely time of the year to be doing it

It is until it isn't. Was halfway through a run last week when it torentially pissed down. My running shoes weren't ready.

Always find this time of year difficult in terms of layering. Went out this morning in a long-sleeve Ron-Hill with thin windbreaker/water resistant jacket on top and was way, way too warm.

Apparently the Leicester Half don't allow earphones. How strict are they on this?

It would depend who sees you really I guess, but you are right that they don’t allow them. It’s probably not worth risking getting thrown out but I recon they would just tell you to remove them.

That said, it’s obviously going to be busy so you risk tripping someone over potentially.

Last minute sign up to Leicester Half after a nightmare at Tissington Trail Half last weekend. Considering pushing for a PB although I’m not sure I can bank enough time before hitting New Walk

25 minute park run at Abbey park today which I'm very happy with seeing as I was out late drinking in Ashby. Having spent so much time there as a kid I've not always appreciated just how good a park it can be, particularly early in the morning.

Me and my mate are working our way through the Leicestershire list with Beacon Hill likely to be last lol

They will take your nib number and null your result.

I'm marshalling next week after running about 20 half marathons over the last 20 years  but at 53 it's just getting so hard.

Had some niggles so got an email asking if I would volunteer as a marshall.

Starts at 7 and ends at 1 so might have been easier doing the half after all🤣🤣.

Good luck to everyone next week, keep it easy this week and dont bomb down London Rd too quick at the start and run out of steam at Watermead!!!
