Strava predicted times are further out than Garmin so it depends on where it’s getting it from. I’d also so it’s probably more likely to be volatile if it’s not got many runs to go from.

Find Strava times hit and miss. Id say the majority of predictions it does for me is about right apart from the marathon one which is too generous.

My watch is Amazfit and the app for that is a bit more all over the place. It has my HM slower than my Strava, but the marathon ten mins quicker 🤣

I mostly rely on the Strava heart rate stuff I think that's a better accuracy

Surely Strava gets your heart rate through your watch?

Ive just got a Garmin heart monitor chest strap and that seems to give me more accurate and consistent heart rate data which could be quite useful for proper training.

Yes it does but the zones are different and more accurate on Strava imo. I've never adjusted it on Strava, the zones and the BPM for each zone I mean it just by default. Watch has me in HRZ 3 at at over 149, whereas Strava zone 3 starts at 157. Yes I could change it I think but CBA. So I go off the Strava ones, although obviously monitor heart rate on the watch.

Strava reckons my max HR is 193 which I'll take as by age that would be for 27 year old 🤣

Tbh I find heart rate sometimes nonsense. The temperature plays a massive part, when it's cold like now or roasting in summer the HR is obvs higher.

Definitely think the heart monitor you've got will be more accurate for sure, be interesting to see what the readings difference is!

I’ve been looking at the predicted times today funnily enough. Just signed up for Strava Premium during my training block.

My Garmin Forerunner has my marathon time as 4hr21 however Strava has it at 4hr45.
Both have me down for near exactly the same time within 30 seconds of each other on the half marathon so god knows.

Oh wow, from mine and what I’ve read from others, Strava usually predicts lower times but who knows.

Good morrow chaps!

Long time no post (and a new account after forgetting my details), but I always keep an eye on this thread and the anxiety-inducing football topics. I'm still running and decided to take the plunge with a charity place for London after receiving my 10th consecutive rejection last year.

I work in the property sector and also volunteer at a soup kitchen through work every couple of months and thus decided that Shelter would be a great charity to run for.

Hoping for a sub-3 hour time - but we'll see how confident I am come mid-March! Quite looking forward to the training in a sadistic way. It's long and boring, but it does help provide a little bit of structure to an otherwise chaotic world.

Sorry to join the fundraising pileon of the past couple of pages - but if anybody does have a spare bob or two then I'd be eternally grateful, though I appreciate it's not an ideal time of year to be throwing cash around (so Top and Rudkin say).

Finally sorted my shit out.

Monsall half in March, 50k ultra around Loch Ness in May. Would have loved to have done the 2 dayer but it’s probably too big of a step up from what I’ve done before.

I’m doing the Loch Ness Marathon later this year. Looks like a quick course

Ah sweet. Yeah ive looked into that and it’s on the list. Overall decline so yeah looks like a chance of a PB. Saw a video of it which suggested it wasn’t scenic as you would think being flat.

I've started to obsess over fuelling and fluids now i'm stepping up to marathon and beyond distances. I think in the past for most of my running I've not taken enough on and probably get away with it but i'm conscious of the volume of mileage in the training block means i'll need to be better in the lead up and then on the day over 4 hours of running.

What do folk do for training runs for 2-3 hour runs and then for the marathon itself?

Looking at it, I think it's at least 500ml of water every hour with electrolytes, will throw in a Lucozade Sport as well and then somewhere between 30-50g of carbs and hour which is going to be mainly gels (that I fcukin hate)

Has anyone got any trail shoe recommendations? I’d forgot how lucky it was to find normal running trainers that I love and now I’m back in the fresh hell of trying to filter out mixed reviews.

I know this is very ****ing stupid , and it’s probably why I felt ill after it, but during my marathon I took on 250ml of electrolytes with no additional water. This was probably for 2 reasons, the first was it rained that badly I probably hydrated via osmosis and the second was being desperate for a piss but not wanting to stop.

On the days leading up, I loaded on electrolytes as your body will store it is my understanding. Fueling wise I took a very different approach based on a video I watched of a guy that ran round with a glucose/carb (I think) monitor on him. If I remember rightly, he aimed to take on about 60 grams an hour based on the results of that so you are talking about a gel every 20 mins.

I got a bit confused by the end because I kept all of the empty ones in my pocket so ended up probably taking about 10 gels including one before I started. When I’m training it was one every 5k which is a bit less, it gets expensive.

If you are drinking that amount of water I think it might end up getting quite uncomfortable but that’s just my opinion.

Gel wise, what do you use? There are a few that I’ve grown to like now and I suspect with you using more of them you will get used to them. The SIS Cherry flavour is the GOAT.

Ive bought a few of them jelly cube things to test out this weekend.

Yeah, I never drink that much. In a half marathon I drink probably a 500ml Lucozade Sport and a few mouthfuls of water over 1hr 45.

Bottom line my stomach won't accept more than 4-5 gels in 4 hours running. I have bowel disease and that ain't happening. I need to work out how to get carbs and electrolytes in without a) drinking like a camel and b) eating like a 7 month old.

This might not be the game for me 😂

Ouch. You’d get by on 4/5 in 4 hours I’d imagine but it might not be pretty after mile 20.

My first marathon, I did on 2 gels and a flapjack so it’s doable 😂. I suppose that’s all part of the training, see how you feel on longer runs on limited carbs.

Have a look into these, might be better than gels.

A friend that does Ultra marathons said he uses Nerd clusters as a fuel source, when he’s done with the gels (as he can only stomach so many on a run)

I’ve used dried fruit (mango) and sweets before, definitely worth trying different bits in training to see how your stomach copes and how quickly they kick in. The thing I really like about gels is how quickly they give me a boost, they often get me out of a hole and luckily I’ve never had any dodgy stomachs on them.

I'm going shopping for running shoes this morning as it's fairly obvious the Adidas Supernovas I bought in reserve a couple of years ago aren't going to cut it (they've changed the sizing and I've given up any hope of them being comfortable) so mentally preparing myself for how soul destroying that's going to be

After all that fuss got myself a pair of New Balance 860s that seem to fit pretty well. Bit annoyed to see them for £15 less on THEIR OWN WEBSITE when I got in, though

Will try some. Genuinely thinking a few pepperami's as well.

I’ve been trying nerd clusters! My issue with using them as fuel on ultras is that after a while the sugar is too much. I’ve used crushed up ritz biscuits and will be trying boiled new potatoes this time around
