Why not go for wood?

Good quality double glazed  wood windows which are well maintained is both better for the environment  and likely to last longer than UPVC

Currently have those and they’re a nightmare. We live in a rural and exposed location. I have to sand them every window and door every summer and repaint them. It takes 2 weeks out of my summer and cba anymore! That’s not to mention the wood filling I have to do around all that.

Depends on the design and how many openers, standard opening casements or sliding sash windows. Which coloured foil ie Oak, Teak, Anthracite Grey foiled etc  Composite or PVCu Doors? Too many variables to pluck a figure out. Just make sure the fitters are top notch and Fensa, Certass, Assure registered or you'll be paying for a certificate when or if you sell the house in the future.

We live in a barn conversion so need a specialist (not likes of Safestyle). Not really sure what you mean, but I’m sure I will get to know when I start looking for suppliers and fitters. Our windows from the inside are all the same and are double standard casements (if that’s the right terminology, I tried to take a photo but file is too large). We’ll have to go for a cream colour to blend in with everyone else. Unsure what coloured foil. Even an approximate range would be helpful. Could we be talking over a grand per window for example?

Sounds like they’re coming to end of life for sure!

New ones surely wouldn’t need doing so often…. Even the best UPVC ones (to my eyes) don’t look quite right…. Agreed they need more TLC more often though so can fully understand your reticence

We had double-glazed wood at our old house, elevated exposed location too. And North Coast of Ireland, so the weather was awful most of the year. We only had ours fully painted twice, with the odd minor touch up, in 12 years. They were 6 years old when we bought the house. The frames were all acacia, which helped.

The new house UPVC ones aren't as nice, but a little less maintenance.

I think they weren’t  treated properly when we moved in a few years ago. But I’ve heard lots of issues with them not lasting long around where I live.

Sounds an awful lot to me. I own a Glass and PVCu Windows and Doors business so I'm not just blustering. To reach £1k per window they'd almost need to be complete full height screen style frames which then require toughened glass and usually a bit more making good once the window frames are installed. Get at least three quotes and recommendations as there are a lot of chancers in this game.

Hi @l444ry , just started looking online for replacement casement window prices for our bathroom.

All the online sites ask for email address and so on, so expect to be bombarded with quotes.

As a guide, what would I be looking at, supplied and fitted, for a standard white uPVC window approx 1.1 x 1.2m with a single opening at the top and also, how much more would it be for brown uPVC?

We're in a bungalow, so window is at ground floor level.

Thanks

We just had Everest around for a quote - 10 windows and 4 doors (3 single, 1 double) - £25k 🤣

He also said they were doing a free upgrade to triple glazing which was the £25k price, but then knocked off £5k to go back to double glazing. Not sure how that’s a free upgrade for double to triple…

I had all of my windows replaced last year and my advice would be to forget about the nationwide companies who try to feed you compete bullshit along the lines of free upgrades and only being able to hold the he price for today. I’d recommend getting quotes from local companies as there are plenty of them, they’re much cheaper and you don’t get the bullshit.

We’re trying, but finding it hard to actually make contact with more local firms. But got at least one quote coming we think from a local company who came around a few months back to have a look and gave an informal quote that was nearly half the price from Everest.

Yesterday the quote was said to be active for a week! We’ve had to get planning permission and suspect he thinks we live in a rich a postcode, and I think that may have bumped the price up. Also thinking about it there was no conversation about how the windows might differ on different specs - he just railroaded us down an option that would replace what we have like for like.

Friend of mine recently used Magna windows and highly recommended them to me.

So... let me get this right... the triple glazing should cost £20k.

Exactly. It wouldn’t be so offensive - but it’s all over their website and he told me when he arrived!
