Thinking of taking the plunge and getting pet insurance for my 3 year old dog but never done it before.

Just wondering if people think it's worth it and if so, any recommendations of companies/plans that I should look out for?

Answering this has to be more interesting than watching us struggle to attack a league two team.

My dog was insured by scratch and patch with a limit of £8k. Unfortunately he suffered a back issue which is common in the breed. Anyway the surgery and all the care was £8k and tbf these guys sorted it with the vets without question so with that in mind I would fully recommend them. The monthly cost was low as well only about £20. Nigel isn’t currently insured as insurers won’t cover the same issue until 2 years later. We should get quotes soon but it’ll be hundreds a month now due to what happened.

I would say get the dog insured though cos the cost of anything in the vets is crazy. You either put £100 away each month as a contingency or just get a decent affordable cover level.

Pet inurance is nearly as necessary as Pet Insurance.  If we didnt have it our pet bills would be £5k a year.  Unfortunately Lucious Singh our Dachshund has many allergies and a skin condition.

100% worth it, just check the small print. My cat became diabetic when he turned 10 and most of the costs were covered…. for one year. I hadn’t realised this.

After that year, they refused to cover him for anything linked to diabetes and his fee went up to £35 a month. Obviously everything can be linked to diabetes if you don’t want to pay, so we cancelled and let him live out the remaining 3 years without insurance and we had to pay for his insulin, needles, checks etc. He was put to sleep this year after the vets suspected he had cancer.

So my recommendation would be to get insurance, but make sure you check the T&Cs and pay like 50p more a month to have lifetime cover.

Yeah I'm certainly seeing a pattern from all the replies, sound like £15-20 a month is well worth it.

God help me when I spell her name wrong on the application form lol

I had noticed there were 3 different types of cover. Time-limited, amount-limited and lifetime. It sounds like lifetime is the way to go :)

Reasons not to insure your pet:

  1. You’ve won the lottery
  2. You inherited vast sums of wealth
  3. You enjoy selling body organs to pay your vet bill
  4. You hate your pet and want it to die

I actually think number 4 is what you show the world when you don't insure

I hate insurance, I've never claimed on a policy I've taken out for anything so only ever buy the minimum legal amount of cover...except the dogs. And boy have we claimed on our policies for each and every dog we've ever had.

You must live a charmed motoring life....   or not own a car!

Lifetime

Lifetime

Lifetime

100% agree with this. Get lifetime cover.

Mine is currently insured by ManyPets. Not the cheapest but he's had a few issues so worth it for us. We've previously had a decent experience with PetPlan - had to make a claim for over a grand and they sorted it pretty quickly.

The Exec responsible for Pet Insurance at Markerstudy Insurance is a long time LCFC supporter and ticket holder. The people who built their  advanced IT system for managing any Pet claim are LCFC season ticket holders. You'll get any claim paid much quicker than others.
