It is and Saudi are playing a game and are trying to come across as they’re catching up with the times. I mean it’s the World Cup, not every host nation is going to have western sensibilities unless you’d rather we just do a European host every year

I personally would if only for the kick off times

The 2030 World Cup is problematic. An entire continent has given up the ability to host for 24 years on the basis of 3 games. One of those games is being played in a completely new ground with involvement of the national bodies families construction firm!

Can see a huge falling out over the 2030 final as well. Morocco are building a 115k stadium

I'm all for other Countries hosting it but not to Countries like Saudi Arabia.

Of course I'll be watching it but with everything there like no free speech I just don't think it's right they hold it.

FIFA was much better run under Platini and blatter. Tbh though I’ve got no issue with this, they’ve chucked a tonne into the game wasn’t like Qatar

Depends how you like your corruption.

Under the previous regimes there was a vote and bidders went out of their way to bribe those voting then the scrutiny committees meant to stop it.

Infantino has basically done away with scrutiny committees and instead engineered it so he can say who he wants has it. For example, miraculously Saudi Arabia had a bid ready to go as soon as the much reduced 28-day period offered to get bids in was announced as well as FIFA’s stipulated conditions for the tournament.

They can’t even go with the argument ‘it’s never been to the Middle East’ because it was there last. Part of the reason the whole announcement was done online is so no journalists can ask questions as with previous FIFA announcements. The ‘vote’ was done by clapping!

I thought I’d probably see a World Cup in England in my lifetime, but it’s probably unlikely now. It’s been pointed out that the 2038 World Cup (if FIFA keeps its own rules) would have to be in the USA again because of the mess of giving three games to South America in 2030.

Got my years mixed up.

Never mind the Saudi world cup. The 2030 one is an absolute mess. Spreading across 2 countries is bad enough, unless they are small, let alone a third one on a different continent....

And then 3 games in South America lol

I don’t think free speech should be a requirement for a host nation personally, my concern with Saudi would be the overall treatment of women and LGBT. if there’s a threat for people to come then it probably shouldn’t be allowed

however Qatar was rather lax with these issues, think Saudi will probably follow suit. They’re playing a game, doing it with all of the sports to try and look more like the UAE.

FIFA has been corrupt for years and it gained public attention for such under Platini and Blatter.  As for your second sentence,  yes it's called sport washing,  exactly the reason why an odious regime such as the Saudis should not be awarded the world cup.

It already gained lots of attention under Joao Havelange.

I've lost hope such organizations will ever not be corrupt. But the egregiousness and obviousness of doing these practices out in the open, is really galling. They're not even trying to hide it anymore and all the puppet national associations, except Norway, are clapping their hands.

No-one is willing to do anything about it because political leaders outside of FIFA are playing along.
