I don’t think they were Saudi citizens (makes it worse )

extreme interpretations of sharia law

And we saw the extreme interpretation of ‘western’ law a few weeks back in the states

the Iranians were killing ‘their own people’ by the thousands for protesting about the regime - that is a difference Mac

The degree of killing is certainly different, but I'm not sure how different the mindset behind said killing is, and how that difference then apparently translates to vastly different treatment from those international powers that who pass judgement on them both.

At the base level, Saudi is a strategic ally in the region and Iran is not …

as you say, realpolitik

In this digital on demand age, the licence fee is an anachronism.

The fact remains, however, that a ring-fenced source of funding to (at the very least) the news element of the Beeb is a matter of essentialness.

Perhaps an even bigger anachronism is that there is still a b&w tv licence fee, which is about £100 cheaper. Who the hell watches black and white telly any more? Tbh, I'm struggling to work out how it's even technically possible to do so.

That's pretty much what it comes down to, yes.

And it stinks and it's puerile and will lead to no good end.

You do wonder how many people still have a TV old enough to receive such a signal with b/w output, and secondly why.

May be a graphic of map and text

It’s not that straightforward though is it

we saw that leaving wasn’t a simple process and rejoining would likely be the same.

would we be able to keep sterling ?

would we have to become part of Schengen ?

what about all the opt outs we had before ?

the stay outers would bring these things up and the polls may looks a bit different then …..

It's quite funny that one of the arguments brexiters now use is that we won't be able to get the sweet deal we had before

Mmmm, little unfair I feel.

I have heard them say any rejoin deal won't be as good as the one we had before. Remember, brexiters were not happy with that deal, so understandable they would not be too happy with an even less favourable one

Better news:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmy0ryjx7741o

A US judge has ordered President Donald Trump to answer questions under oath in his defamation lawsuit against the BBC by 11 December.

Trump is suing the BBC over an episode of Panorama that edited together two different sections of a speech he gave before the riot at the US Capitol in 2021.

Charles Tobin, a lawyer representing the BBC, said in court that "we still haven't been able to depose the plaintiff" with two months left in the discovery period.

Trump cancelled a previous deposition on 16 October, citing "matters of national importance" while he was campaigning in Georgia.

In US law, a deposition is an out-of-court statement made under oath in response to questions, which is recorded for use in later proceedings.

The judge in the case, US Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett, said that Trump must sit for the deposition by 11 December, unless the discovery period is extended.

Last week, attorneys asked that Lett compel Trump to face deposition after the last scheduled meeting did not take place.

On that day, Trump attended a midterms campaign rally in Dalton, Georgia and a fundraiser at his property in Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

In a separate filing on Wednesday, Trump's lawyers said that the president could appear for the interview between 11 and 22 January next year, and claimed that the BBC was "wrong to claim that President Trump is avoiding his deposition in this action."

Hopefully the Beeb legal team is top notch.

"Climate events, among others, could have a massive effect on the supply chain".

Oh, look, it's only what the scientific corps studying such things has been saying would be an effect for decades.

Wes Streeting is telling us that households should have a torch when everything goes tits-up. What, just one torch?
